Book Description

0750684895 978-0750684897 March 20, 2008 1
Biosecurity and Bioterrorism is the first book to take a holistic approach to biosecurity with coverage of pathogens, prevention and response methodology. The book is organized into four thematic sections: Part I provides a conceptual understanding of biowarfare, bioterrorism and the laws we have to counteract this; Part II investigates known bioagents and the threat from emerging diseases; Part III focuses on agricultural terrorism and food security; Part IV outlines international, US, and local initiatives for biodefense and biosecurity. Case studies illustrate biodefense against both intentional terrorism and natural outbreaks.

The authors bring an extraordinary combination of experience in academia and the clinical world, as well as real-world experience in technical and practical matters, to their writing. They make technical material clear and fascinating for readers with a basic knowledge of biology. Ryan and Glarum address the hazards in the context of vulnerability assessments and the planning strategies government and industry can take to prepare for and respond to such events.

* How are these agents used in biowarfare?
* How likely are we to face either a natural outbreak or intentional human/animal infection?
* How can we prepare for this effectively?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, November 29, 2008

This review is from: Biosecurity and Bioterrorism: Containing and Preventing Biological Threats (Butterworth-Heinemann Homeland Security) (Hardcover)
As an Emergency Preparedness Planner, I found this book to be valuable. Ryan and Glarum cover not just human diseases, but all potential biological threats and means to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and manage the consequences.

Well organized, with content understandable to both the non-medical and medically backgrounded EM professional. Information in previous chapters make the more complex concepts found in later chapters comprehensible. There is a helpful balance of illustrations and sidebars that reinforce the content. The list of references with each chapter will give you deeper background into the subject matter. By considering the critical thinking and discussion questions, key concepts are reinforced.

If you have a need for this knowledge, I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook EVer, June 13, 2011

This review is from: Biosecurity and Bioterrorism: Containing and Preventing Biological Threats (Butterworth-Heinemann Homeland Security) (Hardcover)
I love this book! I study for fun (because I have no life) and this has made me quite knowledgeable on biosecurity. It covers all the major topics and isn't too hard to understand. It's a fantastic read and study guide and I highly recommend it to everyone, especially those in the medical field. Just be sure you have a strong stomach because even though the pictures aren't in color, it still has some pretty nasty stuff.
