For the past few years a group of independent scientists, privately funded, have been preparing for a bold attempt to create a self-contained "world". Dubbed "Biosphere II" (Biosphere I being Earth), the project composes eight "biospherians" that will be sealed into a glass paneled complex. The idea is that for two years all air, water, plants and animals in the system will feed upon and sustain one another. Their only links to the outside world will be visual and electronic - via the telephone, fax and computer. The biosphere consists of mini-environments - a marshland, desert, rain forest, and an ocean with tidal rhythm and a living coral. This book chronicles the conception of the Biosphere II project.

Biosphere 2--by the man that built it,

The book fully describes the efforts that went into the construction of the biosphere, the selection and collection of all the varied plants and animals picked to be a part of Biosphere, including the selection of the first crew that lived inside it for 2 years. Lots of good illustrations show the project at various stages of construction, lots of different shots of the different biomes and the plants and animals in each. Good pics of the crew at work and at play too. See the Biosphere as it was in its original condition.One thing is for sure-the Biospherians had to work hard every day just to survive. Many lessons were learned from this great, multimillion dollar experiment in the Arizona desert.
