Review of "Biosynthesis in Insects advanced edition", January 24, 2011
This review is from: Biosynthesis in Insects (Paperback)
This is a very thoughtful and well writtten summary of the biosynthesis of a variety of insect chemicals, including fatty acid and fatty acid derived chemicals, terpenoids, aromatic compounds and alkaloids. It is written from a chemical viewpoint and does an excellent job of describing biosynthetic pathways. It is not an insect biochemistry text, but is a very thorough and easy to read book on insect biosynthesis. It grew out of an earlier version "Biosynthesis in Insects" and the author expanded, updated and generally made it a better book. It is full of high quality and easy to follow illustrations, mostly of biosynthetic pathways. After three introductory chapters on biosynthetic pathways, enzymes and co-enzymes and experimental methods, the author goes into detail on the biosynthesis of fatty acids and hydrocarbons, aliphatic compounds from fatty acids, aceto-propiogenins, lower terpenes, higher terpenes and steroids, aromatic compounds, alkaloid and compounds of mixed biosyntheric origin, plants substances altered and sequestered by insects and ends with a chapter on looking ahead. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in insect biochemistry.
