Book Description

Artscroll Mesorah Series February 1980
Every twenty-eight years, for a few hours on a Wednesday morning in April, throngs of Jews fill streets, sidewalks, rooftops and parks for the most infrequent ritual in Judaism the Blessing of the Sun. The ancient rite marks the return of the sun to the exact place it occupied on the fourth day of Creation on the same day and at the same hour that the sun began to shine in the primordial heavens.
Questions about Bircas HaChammah abound. How is the 28-year cycle, which is not at all discernible to the naked eye, calculated? Was it known to the ancients? How do Jews reconcile the solar and lunar calendars? What are the appropriate prayers for this rare event, and what do they mean? What is the underlying spiritual message of the practice?
Bircas HaChammah: Blessing of the Sun-Renewal of Creation tackles these questions and more. The book also features the complete prayer service for the Blessing of the Sun, along with translation and commentary.
Author and renowned scholar Rabbi J. David Bleich brings to the book his boundless knowledge of the subject matter and his familiarity with the entire corpus of rabbinic literature -- including many rare works that have long been out of print related to the topic.
The result is a masterful treatment of a little-known ritual that nonetheless bears profound significance for the many who believe that there is a Creator who preserves and renews His universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough look at the rarest Jewish calendar event, March 11, 2009
By
Bircas Hachammah is, without a doubt, the rarest of all Jewish calendar events. (It comes once every 28 years). Rabbi Bleich is an accomplished halachic analyst, and has already written several volumes entitled "contemporary halachic problems". He takes the same rigorous and thorough analysis style and applies it here to bircas hachammah. He starts off by explaining the calendar (no simple task) and explains the various calculations people had for the length of the solar and lunar years, and how the interacted. He then goes through the origins of bircas hachammah, shows how people have responded to it over time, and covers all the relevant laws with both footnotes and superfootnotes for completeness. (Superfootnotes are footnotes on the footnotes). Lastly he has the entire service with commentary, and has appendices which show the dates and times of various astrological events related to bircas hachammah.

Don't let the Artscroll name fool you - Bleich has done a comprehensive literature review and this is a serious book that takes into account the history, the law, and the tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great time for a sale on Gold Box, May 12, 2009

The Wise Bard (Madison, WI USA) - See all my reviews
While I'm sure this is a fine work by my friend and former colleague David Bleich, it is now somewhat low on the immediacy scale. My bedside book pile is pretty tall, but I guess I can try to get to this in the coming 27+ years. Maybe it fits in just above "Preparing for the Next Visit of Halley's Comet"!
Of course, in Jewish tradition, study can be its own reward. Some of my co-religionists are working on the laws of red heifers as we speak. (No political or apocalyptic significance intended--at least, not by me.)

For an event that occurs only once every 28 years, I wish I had had the book prior to the occurrence. It gives great insight into the event and the prayers to be said.
