To blacken one's gun sights with a ultra-flat, non-reflective coating you can use either a carbide lamp, a lit candle, or Birchwood Casey's Sight Black.

While I like the carbide lamp method most of all, such as the "Ray Vin Super Smoker", it is much easier to use a candle (not quite as flat-black as carbide), or even easier still; Birchwood Casey's Sight Black. The Birchwood black supplies near the same ultra-dull black as a candle or carbide, but will not heat up the sights (any polymer/plastic in the vicinity of the carbide/candle flame would melt).

The secret to using this spray is to shake the can vigorously for thirty seconds, and then IMMEDIATELY apply a light coating to your sights. The 'immediate' part is vital, or the suspended sight black will settle very quickly in the can, leaving only the clear liquid carrier spurting out of the nozzle. Further -- and the reason I didn't give this product five stars -- is that you need to press the nozzle button down very lightly and very quickly while applying the sight black, or far to much is expelled all over creation, causing a black mess.

FYI: Any dull sight-black is not permanent, and will wipe off if touched or covered with oil.
