5.0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book!
I have three children, ages 3, 6 and 8. They all love this book! We leave it sitting on a coffee table with a view of our bird feeder, and all my children have learned to identify all of the birds in the book. My 8 year old takes the book outside and sits quietly and "calls" to the birds (and they even answer, sometimes)! This book has gotten them all interested in...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing bells and whistles
I was very excited to get this book for my one year old, bird-loving daughter after reading other posted reviews. The bird call buttons only worked for a day. I assumed that the battery was dead, so attempted to change it, but couldn't find a screwdriver minute enough to fit the miniscule screw and had to give up. The pull flap idea to see the mystery bird is cute, and...

My 8 year old takes the book outside and sits quietly and "calls" to the birds (and they even answer, sometimes)! This book has gotten them all interested in observing the nature they have in their own backyard. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listening to bird calls, December 31, 2003

I bought this for my 13 month old grandchild thinking I would save it until she was older. She absolutely loves the book! Each time she comes to visit she wants to listen to the calls over and over. At 15 months, she can now identify the birds by call as well as by picture and has become ever more fascinated by the birds in our yard. I know that in the next few years she will become interested in the information on the birds which my husband and I have enjoyed reading. I am ordering three more books for gifts for other grandparents to share with their youngsters.

A parent shared this book with my son's preschool class when they were doing a lesson on birds. The kids had alot of fun trying to guess the birds based on the description and the sounds. The teacher's and myself were so impressed with this book that I came home and ordered two copies...one for the class and one for my home!! I am also planning on purchasing "Night Sounds", also written by the same author.

The pull flap idea to see the mystery bird is cute, and my daughter was excited to see the birds emerge, but several of them would not close again without major contortions (for me, impossible for my daughter) and have gotten harder and harder to close with use, so now we just leave them all open. The information is great and the pictures are very well done, but the calls and pull flaps are very poor quality. I would not recommend that anyone buy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars overrated, November 14, 2008

I relied on the positive reviews on Amazon and purchased this product for my granddaughter. I personally was disappointed, as there are only 8 birds included in the book. However, I will say that my grandaughter seems to enjoy the book (I wouldn't say she "loves" it) and a few of the birds like the Killdeer and Spotted Towhee are not common to youngsters so, it does provide a tiny bit of educational value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, January 23, 2004

I purchased this book for my 6 year old son who loves it. It is well written and has great picture's. The colors are vibrant and eye catching. The pull tabs seem sturdy and that they can withstand the abuse of a 6 year old. The only thing is be prepared for loud birdie noises! They do get on your nerves after awhile. Other than that, it is a very nice book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bird Calls is a great way to teach young children about birds!, October 13, 2008
This review is from: Bird Calls (Hear and There Books) (Hardcover)
I ordered this book for my two year old grandson and he loves it! It's been so popular with other kids that I've ordered three more as presents. The ability to "find" the bird in the leaf cover and then to play the bird calls is what makes the book so attractive. We don't read all the information about each bird because it's too much for little kids; besides, we're too busy playing the calls. A fun and unintended way to use the book is to open it to a particular bird and then play the wrong call; my grandson, who is learning about jokes, loves to do this and then look at me and say "That's not a chickadee" as he plays the barred owl call.
If you have young children who are interested in birds (or you want them to be interested in birds) this is the best book I've found for little ones.

This is a treasure of a book with pictures, information, and sounds of birds. My nieces and grandchildren have used it over and over and over. They have learned bird calls and identification.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for different ages., December 7, 2009

This review is from: Bird Calls (Hear and There Books) (Hardcover)
I gave this book to my 2 year old grandson for his birthday. He absolutely loved it! He didn't want to play with anything else. For a child that young an adult will need to help. The tabs can be torn and can be a bit difficult to pull out. This is a book a 2 year old can't use alone, but most kids that young need to be supervised with paper books anyway. I have no problem recommending this book. An adult needs to participate to read the information about the birds. The birds are easily recognisable. You flip up the page to get bird info, pull the tab to see the bird and press the button to hear the sound it makes. It would be very suitable for an older child that is reading. I love this book and would purchase it again.
