5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and full of life experience
Bird is an amazing recording. In an industry full of overproduced, undertalented puppets on strings, it is refreshing to hear a true artist. Kathleen York has a wondeful voice, full of emotion. Bird has the ability to play with your feelings. Hopeful one moment, sad the next. It is a very rich recording, with multiple layers of instrumentation and vocals.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cantankerous album, lacking in shadings.
Kathleen York's guitar work is fine, but her vocals and songwriting are real weak points. With a gravelly voice recalling Fiona Apple, but without the spunk that makes Apple such an intriguing singer, York's singing borders on the inexpressive and is occasionally even unpleasant. Not unsuitable to her choice of materials, perhaps, but I find the whole approach...

At times you feel like you are in a dream directed by David Lynch. This is a wonderful CD. I recommend listening to it at night in a dark room, with a good cabernet and many cigarettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut, December 10, 1999

I don't think this CD will be leaving my player for a while! Kathleen York has a great voice, and it's put to great use here. And while I usually tend to ignore the lyrics when I listen to music, 'Open Wider' and 'Bought a Gun' have great lyrics. The only song I could live without is Prozac Day...the rest is gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Bird's A Keeper, April 26, 2000
By

Kathleen York is a true renaissance woman - a brilliant and sensitive singer/songwriter and unparallelled actress. It's no surprise that her most recent album - Bird - is composed feet to beak of trenchant observations about the human condition; songs that walk the wire between personal revelation and universal declaration. Where many albums glide along on the strength of one or two good songs, Bird doesn't have a weak track on it. Beginning with the plaintive "Come Home," York takes off for the sky, showing how effective spare, poetic lyrics and an uncluttered production can be when combined with a voice that's captivating and urgent. Although it has become popular for singers to go for sheer volume, York wisely chooses to pull her listeners in rather than push them back. Her voice is soft, almost conspiratorial on powerful songs like "Bought A Gun" and "Save Me," making one feel that they're present at the very inception of the song, integral to its very development. In an era when so many albums end up unplayed after a year or two, Bird is a definite keeper for a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bird York makes a great debut, October 13, 2001

I'm a huge fan of Portishead, and when I heard comments about Bird York sounding similar to them, I had to check her out. I was not disappointed, and I've grown to love her music more than Portishead. The best song on this CD is "Open Wider", though they are all great.

I bought this C.D. "blind". I never heard a single cut of this C.D. before I purchased it. I bought it on the strength of a review comparing her music to Everything But The Girl and Portishead. I am not disappointed. Bird York has the magnetism of both Beth Gibbons and Tracy Thorn and should be on the A-List of pop vocalists. Beth and Tracy have better production crews, however. The mixing and engineering of the Portishead and Eveything But the Girl's production organizations are pristine. Bird York only gets a B+ on her production. That is a minor criticism and should be taken as such. Bird York will broaden her audience because she has the charisma and the artistry to do so. I would love to hear some remixes of songs on this CD by some of the great trip hop and techno specialists. A remix by Moby would problably render me a helpless Bird York zombie, given that fact that I have a weakness for naked backs. If anyone out there has more information on Bird York or wants to give me feedback on this review I am ZenChicken@aol.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Bird York, March 21, 2000

Intensity, the lyrics grab hold of you as Bird's spiritual and sweltering voice filled with fiery passion echoes through your senses. "Save Me", is a song that emerges from the soul which gives a feeling like one remembered. An artist true in form as Ms. York not only sings the music but it is an extension of her extreme talents. For many people favored music is the music that can evoke personalthought or feeling that one can relate to. Bird has a delicious variety of music to choose from and listen to.

You could do a lot worse than invite comparisons to Portishead, but York's Bird takes you even farther into the nether reaches of the soul and lets you find your way back very slowly. Not that I'm complaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cd of all time!, February 25, 2006
This review is from: Bird (Audio CD)
I have every cd that Bird York has done, and I love this one the best. They are all good, but this is my favorite cd of all time. Sultry, sexy, dark and smokey all describe this cd. Alot of times, when a singer has their own style it comes with mumbling, and trying your best to understand the lyrics. Bird has a style that is all her own, and it really works. On this cd, you can understand the incredible poetry that is happening to the hypnotising music. If you put some headphones on, and crank it up, you'll be taken to another place. Birds singing performance on this cd has been un-matched by anyone. She has become my favorite singer of all time. Pick up this cd now, you will be glad that you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting..., December 12, 2001
This review is from: Bird (Audio CD)
I bought this cd a long time ago, listened to one song and put it away for awhile...my second take of this cd was much more profound and worthwhile. Each song managed to grab me, a combination of great songwriting, haunting melodies, and Bird's trademark alto reminiscent of Happy Rhodes in her lower register. This cd is worth purchasing if only for "I'm Not Laughing Anymore" and "What are you running after"...buy this cd, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bird York is a force to be reckoned with!, October 28, 2001

I recently talked to Bird York, and she is absolutely destined to make it big. Her songs are featured on the CBS hit television series "Family Law" airing Monday nights at 10:00, and her songs tackle subject matter that most artists stay away from, but with her soothing voice she does it well. Favorite song on the album is "Save Me". Please purchase this cd, Bird York's talent shouldn't be overlooked!
