My Dog Hates this Book,

This review is from: Bird Songs From Around the World: Featuring Songs of 200 Birds from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Push and Listen) (Hardcover)
I purchased this book with the intention of giving it as a gift to a bird lover I know. However, I ended up keeping it because I was enjoying it too much. Don't worry, I plan to purchase another one and give it as a gift! I find this book fascinating. Knowing that I most likely will not travel to a lot of these places in the world where these birds live, it is pretty cool to be able to see what they look like and to hear their songs. There are only two problems with this book: 1) My dog absolutely hates this book. He either tries to bite the book or runs around the house barking and/or whimpering when he hears the birds. I've noticed he reacts differently to each bird call; what I like to call the 'Jekyll and Hyde effect'. 2) the glue came unglued that hold the sound player in place so I need to apply glue again. Overall though I am glad I own this book. It's a great conversation piece too when guests come over

An odd way of doing the sound clips,

Strong text and great illustrations. The main reason for buying this book, though, should be the excellence of the calls and songs. My complaint is that for most of the 200 species, the book provides a very short clip (about 1 second) that is played four times. You can even hear the player cutting on and off after each repetition. So you may think you're hearing a phrase as the bird would phrase it, but really you are hearing repeated mini-clips. I'm guessing in real life the birds may be more likely to make each repetition slightly different. It is also important to know how long a bird pauses before repeating a phrase, but in this book all the pauses seem to have been equalized. I don't know much about how one produces a bird song book like this, but I can't help but think the book would be better if the clips were maybe seven seconds long and not short clips repeated several times.

I purchased this book for my mother, who loves birds. It is large and heavy. The audio has a good sound, and the controls let you jump from page to page.
One thing to know is that although each bird has multiple calls, this book only gives you one, supposedly the most common.

I bought this book for my six year olds' classroom. They are learning about birds and they are so excited when they can hear the actual bird's song. The sound is great. I am even considering buying one for my home. The only downside was I realized I payed too much after it was too late.

The book by is OK, would have loved for the images to be pictures, not illustrations. Its a big, bulky book. The sound quality on a lot of the bird calls is not great. One can hear a lot of static and not the bird call clearly.
I would not have bought it had I known this.

It has been frustrating trying to use audio tapes to learn to identiy bird calls. Now I finally have a source to picture in my mind the bird while listening to the calls. My retention has improved markedly and I'm grateful for this very fine book.

I bought this book especially as a way to interact with my pet parrot. She loves hearing bird calls coming from the various shows on TV and I thought this book would be perfect to entertain her with.
The song panel is easy to operate, has volume control, and even has an option of playing in "All" mode, so that you only have to press the button once (it's right before song #1, or at the end of song #200), and it will automatically play all the bird calls, one after another, for ten minutes or so on it's own. My bird sits on the book and just listens to the different bird calls with amazement. I'm noticing the more I play it, the more she enjoys it. It's as good as I thought it'd be for entertaining her! The only thing I could say that I wish were better about the book is that if it had more parrot species calls. It only has about two or three out of the two hundred. It's also a great learning tool for us humans too, to hear these different bird calls and read about the birds who make them. I can't wait to get another one of the books in this series to hear even more bird calls and enjoy them with my parrot!

This series of bird song books is awesome. It's easy to scroll through the songs, the sound quality is good, the information on each bird is interesting, and the range of birds is very cool. A treat.

I was pleased with the timely delivery of this fabulous book. Our family has enjoyed so much of bird noises already. These books (we have the Bird Songs of America) are always put together so well.
