My initial thumbing through the book made me think, "Where are the color pictures?", but as I began reading I realized they are telling us n black and white how to get to good birding spots and EVERYTHING to expect once we get there. Excellent layout and charts are included.
For the price of this book, it should have a more useful and rugged binding for field use.

I purchased this book because we are planning a trip to Louisiana for birding next February. I have found it to be an excellent resource for determining the best locations for the birds that we really would like to see while there. Format is very usable and overall very helpful!

This is a wonderful birding guide for locations within Louisiana. Details on so many birding spots throughout the state! A lot of work has gone into this book, and it shows! Recommended for birders birding in Louisiana and potential visitors.

My mom is a bird watcher. She has several field guides, but what's great and different is it breaks the state up into regions and actually tells you where to go to see specific birds. I see several road trips in our future. This would be great for anyone interested in birding who lives in Louisiana, Mississippi, or east Texas.

I am a veteran "snake trailer" and backwoods birder - this book offers the best sites from the best birders in Louisiana. Many places that I have driven by for years are described in detail. This is a real resource that will allow a birder new to Louisiana immediate access to the most productive sites.

Lowry's book on LA birds is so valuable and this guide is a super compliment to his classic book on birds. I look forward to birding in LA and the locations are awesome along with maps. Thank you for a job well done.

This is the very best birding site guide I have ever come across, for any state or region, and for very good reason: the book was published under the auspices of the Atchafalya National Heritage association and the Louisiana state government (Dept. of culture, recreation and Tourism). It is first class all the way, no expense spared for a quality product. It is an unabashed attempt to exploit (in the nicest possible of ways) one of Louisiana's unparalleled natural resources -- birds -- and it is geared to the out-of-state birder.

The big difference in this Louisiana state birding guide compared to others is the quality of the writing. Not only are there expert, experienced birders contributing to the guide, there are professional writers and editors. The book is not only useful, it is beautifully and memorably written, and this enhances the utility. There is an essay on 'Birding Seasons' in Louisiana which offers one of the very best accounts of bird migration I have read.

The writers pull no punches however. They offer the lure, but they are also very upfront about some of the pitfalls for the out-of-state birder who ventures into Louisiana for the spring migration. The summer weather is "intolerable", with more description along that line, and then there is bug season. The migration is spectacular, it is something not to be missed -- but you don't necessarily want to be there for the very peak of the flow (at least I don't) which happens in the 3rd to the 4th week in April. If late April turns out to be warm the deer flies and the mosquitoes could spoil the enjoyment (for me anyway). This is what I like about the book.
