Where, what and when. THE book for birding SE Arizona!,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Birder's Guide to Southeastern Arizona (Lane/Aba Birdfinding Guide #102) (Spiral-bound)
This is a great resource for planning and executing a birding expedition to southeast Arizona. Excellent maps, detailed species accounts, and helpful directions and resource listings. This book tells you what specialties to look for at specific locations and when they are most likely to be found there. A great guide for birding southeast Arizona, from roadside birding to backcountry hiking. I especially appreciate the tear out maps of trails and inside cover maps of locations and ecoregions.

Taylor's updated version is an essential tool for anyone who is not familiar with s.e. arizona, and extremely helpful for those who are. It contains detailed descriptions of birding areas, maps, species to expect at different times of the year, and more. Rick takes you right to the hard-to-find Arizona specialties, as well as all the rest, and does it in an enjoyable manner. This book is fun to read even after leaving Arizona. You will not be disappointed with this one!

This is truly a great guide to birding Southeastern Arizona - But it is very much out of date. The descriptions, directions, etc. are excellent and it is a fairly complete listing of major birding hotspots. For a user that is familiar with that part of Arizona it could still be a very valuable companion. However, changes in the road system, accessibility of some of the areas, and recent developments in birding some areas are simply not reflected here. The thing I found most troublesome was a total lack of references to websites of any kind. Of course this was written before the web really existed. There are phone numbers in most cases, but it's likely some of them are out of date. For most of us, the Tucson Audubon Soc.'s "Finding Birds in Southeast Arizona", latest edition published in 2007, is a much better bet.

This book was highly recommended by a fellow birder. I must have misunderstood and thought the book to be a bird book, but, rather, it was a travel guide on how/where to locate birds in this area. No pictures of birds! So as long as you are not looking for a bird book, it was highly recommended to me but just wanted to point this out in case anyone else makes the same mistake. I returned it, not at all what I was looking for. (I wasn't sure how to rate the book since it was mainly a misunderstanding)
