Book Description

September 5, 2011 1 - 6 yearsBirdie Series
That night, Birdie dreamed of dresses--
fluttery floral sundresses...
lovely lace sheaths...
chic chiffon gowns...

In this follow-up to Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes, our favorite pint-sized fashionista is looking forward to a very BIG day--her birthday. But when Birdie tries on her favorite party dress, she realizes that - oh no! - it's too small. Mommy takes her to the boutique, where she tries on dress after dress, but Birdie realizes that none of these gowns will allow her to run and jump, make messes, and eat cake. Only when she takes a trip up to her favorite thinking place, the attic, does she realize that all it takes the find the perfect "Birdie dress" is a little imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars DELEMA, DELEMA...WHAT IS BIRDIE TO DO? September 3, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I have several different reasons for liking this book and recommending it. From a personal point of view, Birdie, or little fashion expert reminds me of my own daughter when she was a little girl and indeed, Birdie reminds me of my own wife when she was that age...yes, I have know my wife for many, many years now. For me, reading this work took me on a little nostalgic journey and as I do not have any granddaughters or great-granddaughters; alas, only a passel of grandsons, it was a pleasant trip.

Birdie is having a birthday party and when she begins her careful selection of dresses she finds that they are all too small! Oh my, what to do? Well mom comes to the rescue and she and Birdie go shopping for a new big-girl dress. As chance would have it, between several of Birdie's friends beating her to the "good ones," and after trying on dress after dress after dress with no success, Birdie comes to the conclusion that:

"Birdie tried on dress after dress, but none of them felt just like her."

This is a lament I have heard time and again from all of the women in my life...

What to do, what to do?

Well our little imp of a girl and her faithful dog "Monster," (Monster is a little friendly white terrier type dog), take a trip to one of the favorite places in their home...The Attic!" There they find the most wonderful collection of cloths which have been stashed for around three generations. Birdie's creative streak kicks in at this time and the results are....well, you will need to read the book to find this information but I can assure you, the results are delightful.

I also like this book because of the wonderful use the author (who is also the illustrator) has put her watercolors to. We have a combination of "slap-dash" mixed with surprising detail. Strange but very appealing color combinations and blends leap from every page with straight lines mixed with wonderful swirls. Sujean Riim's technique is most certainly her own and I can relate to it.

The author's ability to catch the personality of a little girl is almost perfect and she uses her text and art to prompt creativity is a very subtle way. There is little chance that a young child, while reading this work or having it read to them, will not be able to relate it to their own little creative spark that dwells in all of us.

All in all, there was absolutely nothing I did not like about this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Girl Insights September 8, 2011
By mimomia
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love the way the story is simple---my granddaughter should be able to read it to herself pretty soon-- but it has sweet lessons imbued in it as you go along:

* How a child with a creative mind (future designer) dreams of ideas.

* How it was no big deal to her Mom whether or not Birdie finds a dress... If it doesn't feel right...wait.

* How when Birdie put together her creation in the attic, it felt right---and that was what was important.

The illustrations are of course gorgeous--because they are Sujean's! I study each page for all the patterns and colors and find all kinds of little surprises and delights.

When I read the book out loud to my granddaughters, 4 and 2, they laugh out loud at Birdie's dog, Monster, as he conspires with Birdie in all kinds of silly little ways.

My favorite part is how Charlie, Sujean's son, appears in a cameo. His sense of humor--and fashion sense--comes through by the way he wears two birthday hats at once!

Beautiful Sujean Rim once again writes and illustrates a beautiful children's book: Birdie's Big Girl Dress!

Such a sweet story and every big and little girl can relate. Remember how important those party dresses were (and still are).
