Good General Parrot Book, But Not an Amazon Specific Book,
By Birdman (Madison, MS) - See all my reviews

While the author seems well intentioned, I would say this is a good basic book about keeping parrots as pets in general. However, as a book about Amazon parrots, specifically, it was a disappointment. Many of the chapters were not Amazon specific. For example, Amazon parrots are said to have a problem with Vitamin A deficiency. That is not mentioned in the "Feeding your Amazon" section, or elsewhere. Again, I felt, most of the chapters are too generic, and not really Amazon specific. Even the pictures and descriptions of Amazon parrots at the beginning of the chapter leave out some of the subtypes that are kept as pets. Since I already have a non-Amazon parrot, that part was a really big disappointment. A true book about Amazon parrots should be all inclusive. If you really want a book that gets into the Amazon species in detail, look elsewhere. Unfortunately, after reading reviews about other books, there may not be a really good up-to-date book specifically about Amazon parrots.

I though this book would be a good reference to amazons but all the information about the care, raising and keeping are all the same as his other "fill in the Species name" parrots books. It's not a thick book mostly filled with pictures and it seems like the author just copied and pasted from the other books he wrote. I first bought the birdkeepers guide African Greys (same author) and than I bought this one and notice that all the information was the same. That made me realize that I was ripped off and pissed off, but hey I learned my lesson.

Glendell does a great job of explaining the things all Amazon owners should know. The photos are great too. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering sharing their life with an Amazon parrot.
