Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Soft-edged, gently colored illustrations highlight this pleasant introduction to the joys of bird-watching. The conversational text presents a wide variety of birds, gives tips on providing food and water to attract them, offers directions for building a birdhouse, and gives advice on buying binoculars for children. The illustrations show a nicely orchestrated mix of ethnicity gender in the watching youngsters, though for definite identification of the illustrated birds one really needs a field guide. One map lists the state province birds of the U.S. and Canada, and the other two indicate the common birds in eastern and western North America. This is a helpful resource for teachers who have access to outdoor areas for attracting birds to be observed, and is definitely useful to homeschooling parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!, October 22, 2001
By A Customer
This book is packed with information about birds and bird watching yet it is written in a comfortable entertaining picture book format. It contains a recipe for bird "cake", directions for building a bird box, and even suggests what kind of plants birds may enjoy in your backyard.

What I liked most about this book was the "common" backyard bird identification pages as well as a listing and illustration of every state bird. It was fun to find out what my state bird is as well as other states. The author has done an outstanding job of presenting the joy of birds and bird watching in a beautifully illustrated picture book.

I highly recommend "Birds in Your Backyard" for any young person (ages 4-8) interested in learning about not only birds but who are interested in interacting with their natural environment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better Bird Identification Desired, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Birds in Your Backyard (Sharing Nature With Children Book) (Paperback)
Wonderful information presented very nicely. However, if searching for a book with photos/drawings of birds to aid young potential birdwatchers a buyer may want to make another choice.
The illustrations are much too muted/soft for noting distinctions/characteristics which would be helpful for child and adult alike.

An excellent introduction to birds and birdwatching. Beautifully illustrated to draw young children in. Older children will enjoy the fun facts and hands-on projects. Endorced by the National Wildlife Federation, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the American Birding Association.
