"BIRDS OF BRITAIN" . . . even the title of this pctorial collectors book evokes "the swingin' sixties" . . . The British Invasion" where the first volley was fired by The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show soon exploded into a full scale experience of what Roger Miller sang about in "Englan Swings (Like A Pendulum Do)" . . .

The photo book (measuring 14 inches by about 10 1/2 inches)is a kaleidoscope of entrancing photos of the women who became the "icons" of that time . . . it is a feast for the eyes . . . and a visual "time machine" which captured "time in a bottle" and freeze-framed the enticing allure and beauty of the women photographed for this volume forever. (Every decade needs a book like this . . . and i'm sure that those who's photos appear in it are even more happy and proud today than they were back in 1967 when it first came out . . . so that every future generation can experience their elegance and charm just as we first did in those "mod times" of yore!)

Just a few names included:

The irrisistable and elegant JULIE CHRISTIE (ahh . . remember Her as "LARA" from DOCTOR ZHIVAGO?)

HAYLEY MILLS -- so many grew-up with Her from TIGER BAY, POLLYANNA, THE PARENT TRAP, MOONSPINNERS, THE CASTAWAYS, THE CHALK GARDEN, HASTEN DOWN THE WIND and so many other films . . . here HAYLEY demonstrates the proper way to chug a mug of ale! :)

LULU -- TO SIR WITH LOVE . . . beaming a captivating smile in this volume.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL -- looking more classy and entrancing here than ever.

Having heard that this book graced many a hip coffee table in the 60s, and having an interest in the cool lovely young ladies of that era (since I was a mere primary school tot when it ended and only have vague memories of bouffants and go-go-girls on TV), I was curious to see the photos. I wavered for some time, though, because of the high price that old hardbacks of this artifact now command ($150 and up for a copy in good condition with the Pattie Boyd "beetle" (ha) dustcover). Finally, after perusing some scans of the photos that bloggers have posted here and there, I decided to spring for the book itself and got a nice one in the 150-200 dollar range. I am not unhappy with my purchase, but wanted to pass on a few facts about the book in case anyone else would like to know more about its insides before spending a large amount of money.

1. Apart from the cover photo, all of the photos are in black and white. They are still very nice, just don't expect to see color. (It also contains an essay by Anthony Haden-Guest that spans 5 large pages, and a little blurb on each of the girls so you have some idea about them if you didn't already know who they were.)

2. I had been led to believe by some other books that this book contained some really wild, out-there photography. It does contain a few "far out" shots, such as a model hanging by a noose and another one in stocks, and a debutante screaming with her mouth open, her face contorted and her hair on end. Also quite a few goofy shots of girls eating baked beans from a can and wearing a feathered, tailed bird costume.
