I own the 1st edition book and liked it so much that I bought the second edition with CDs. What a great duo set. Not only do you get fast look up and identification but the CD's matched page by page, file by file are a great way to identify the birds you don't see and only hear. I would recommend this to any birder new or experienced watching birds in the Carolina's. The CD's really take this guide over the top, the cross reference between the book and CD's are great. The fast look up color guides tabs on the pages are excellent for fast identification of male or female species and cross reference them to each other (not that tiny photo you get in most books of the lesser colorful or marked females). Everything is cross referenced, so no more searching, the bird color index tabs are great for birds you may not know by sight, along with an index looking up a bird by name.

we have this book in our home, but found out one of the grands had taken it home with her. so we bought them their own set with the audio cds. they love it.now they are excited to come and share their skill at finding birds that live around here.with 5 grands this comes in handy when we need quiet time for everyone.great way to get kids off the electronics and back to nature.best price found at amazon.

I really like the book and audio CDs. First off, the book is divided into sections based on color, which is the most prominent feature of the birds I watch. Also, it lists both male and female seperately if they have different colors, with a quick reference to the opposing sex's page. This made it easy for me to identify all of the birds I see in my back yard on the bird feeders. The text aso describes behavior of the birds and other interesting facs.
The CD's have each of the birds songs on it with descriptions of the calls and several examples of the different types of calls each bird makes and when they make them.
This guide cuts to the chase for any bird watcher in the Carolinas, showing only birds you'll see here.

Have purchased several books to try and identify birds at our lake house in upstate SC - not much luck until I got this one. The reviews already posted for this book are pretty much right on target - it's simple and easy with great pictures of both male and female of species - the audio tapes are also pretty good augment to the book - I'd definitely recommend - especially for the amateur backyard birder!!
