5.0 out of 5 stars Bird's Custard Powder
My Granny was British, a great cook (ahhhh! Granny's comfort food!!!), and just an angel on earth. When she passed, I wanted things that reminded me of her. I remembered her making Bird's Custard for me once, after she'd been to the British foods shop and found some. I found it on Amazon and ordered a couple of the smaller tubs. 3.0 out of 5 stars What's Cooking Time?
Bought Bird's Custard Powder and the instruction for preparing a pint of custard "on the hob", stopped after item 4 of the instructions which said, "...bring to a boil over gentle heat, stirring continuously. It left out the amount of time it should be cooked.

For Microwave, using the high power setting, the time is stated as 6 minutes. Gentle heat on a hob...

I made it one evening and offered some to my hubby, who doesn't care for too many sweets. He LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this stuff. My small tub disappeared within a week's time. I found the double size tubs and stocked up. My husband will eat this stuff nearly every night. I have some dollar store salt/pepper shakers that I keep nutmeg in... I just put a few shakes of nutmeg on top (like Granny did) and it's perfect. When I want to make a richer pudding, I'll make with some half and half or heavy cream. That's just for special occasions (like PMS!).

Unbelievable taste!!! 2nd to none. Doesn't like to be doubled or tripled from the original recipe, so watch that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, February 26, 2008
This review is from: Birds Custard Powder Double Size 600g (Misc.)
I bought this for a specific recipe in a book and I like the flavor so much I've been looking for more ways to use it. The cake I made with it turned out beautifully, as did the cookies. The cookies didn't even last until the next day! The flavor is mild, but very present in baked goods and custard creams.

Really delightful taste, very light, very, VERY British. Easy to prepare. I'd back off on the recommended sugar and back off a little on the recommended milk for a slightly thicker custard. Lovely, homey type of dessert, ideal with berries or shortcake. 100% recommended -- this stuff is heavenly!!!

I am 65 yrs old, when I was a kid my grandmother would make angel food cake with a wonderful custard sauce.
Before my grandmother passed away I asked her how to make her custard sauce. She was unable to remember, so I asked my mother, she did not know either. My search began but not knowing exactly what I was looking for...
you see my problem.
Finally I discovered Bird's Custard Powder, gave it a try & my oh my this was it.
This is the best custard sauce & very easy to make.
Bird's Custard Powder, remember that name.

My wife and I found a receipe for a chocolate bar while visiting Nainamo BC. It required custard powder, which was very hard to find locally, but online it was easy and Amazon came through again!

3.0 out of 5 stars What's Cooking Time?, April 2, 2011
This review is from: Birds Custard Powder Double Size 600g (Misc.)

Gentle heat on a hob does not equate to high power heat in a MW. I have not used the product, but gave it a temporary 3 stars because I had to provide a rating for the review to be published.

Anybody have suggestions about the amount of time simmer when cooking on a hob? Thanks.

I have used Birds Custard Powder for years when making trifle. I am so happy to find that Amazon carries this, as it's usually not available in local grocery stores. This is my preferred custard for trifle. Thanks, Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied, although should have ordered smaller size., March 8, 2007

This product is great. Its much easier to get in Canada that's why I ordered it online since I am now living in the US. However after the fact - I did find it available at Cost Plus World Market. Next time I will pay attention to the volume of the product. The picture is not the right one. This Double size is really waay to much for my use. I think I now have a lifetime supply.
Using custard powder is way better in homemade nanaimo bars than using vanilla pudding mixes.
