Most Helpful Customer Reviews

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Jack Holloway on September 1, 2008
Format: Paperback
THE BASICS:
softcover; introductory book covers a sampling of species found around Delhi; a total of 155 species are discussed and color photographs are provided for 55 of those species; no range maps

THE REVIEW:
This book provides a brief overview of some of the local birds found in and around Delhi, India. It is not a field nor identification guide, but, a general introduction for someone who is new to or casually interested in the birds that might be seen in the backyard or park.

A total of 155 species are reviewed in this book. Of these, 55 are shown with a decent color photograph. These photos are of mixed quality which vary from good to below average. The birds are typically shown in the photo in good size; however, some of them are a bit too dark, blurry, or not in a good pose to produce a respectable photo. But, keeping in mind this book is more for a general introduction than for identification, the pictures are acceptable.

The text, ranging from one-half to a full page per bird, offers generally good descriptions of each of the species. Additional information is given about the bird's distribution in India along with brief notes on migration, behavior, and feeding.

If you are going to visit Delhi and want a book that will seriously help you with identification of the area's birds, I recommend passing on this book and getting one of the books by Grimmet (Birds of Northern India) or by Rasmussen (Birds of South Asia). -- (written by Jack at Avian Review with sample pages, September 2008)
