This review is from: Bird's Diary (Paperback)
parker was an intelligent and personable man of immense talent and lived quite a life. if he had kept a diary it would no doubt be a great read. this book is not. it is interesting in that it chronicles parker's movements gig by gig over the period covered. however, it is in no way a diary. almost nothing in it is written by parker, there is little, if any, personal insight, and all information is third hand. it is predominantly a date by date cataloging of where he played, who with, and what the particular set played at the gig consisted of. very little else.
if you want to read a real diary of another popular junkie musician i can highly recommend chet baker's "as though i had wings." short, but infinitely more readable and insightful. |
