Book Description

Explore Your World Handbook May 25, 1999
How does an eagle soar? What's the difference between a warbler and a vireo? How do birds communicate? Why do only some birds migrate? What flowers draw hummingbirds to a garden? Birds, an Explore Your World ™Handbook, answers these and other questions, providing a captivating blend of information and entertainment about one of the most popular hobbies.

Incorporating the Discovery Channel's unique, authoritative approach and acclaimed visuals, Birds goes beyond traditional guides by combining field identification techniques with fascinating background information and practical hands-on advice. Organized in a clear, accessible style, beautifully illustrated with more than 300 full color photographs and illustrations, and packed with the most up-to-date information by expert ornithologists, this comprehensive handbook offers birding enthusiasts a wealth of information in a single portable source.

Birds is divided into three main sections:
"Discovering Birds" provides background information to help birders acquire a strong base of knowledge on the fundamentals of bird anatomy, physiology, and behavior--including how birds live, fly, build nest, reproduce, migrate and communicate.

"Birds in Your Backyard" contains practical advice on exploring birds firsthand--including choosing the right binoculars, building a birdhouse, keeping predators out of a bird feeder, and attracting birds to your backyard.

"Identifying Birds" offers a complete at-a-glance identification guide to 150 of the most common North American birds--including descriptions of size, appearance, voice, nest, and eggs, as well as a range map of each bird's habitat.

Birds is sure to delight, teach and entertain bird enthusiasts, and reveal our wondrous world as never before.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

YA-This highly portable birder's companion is printed on glossy paper and liberally illustrated with color charts, graphs, maps, and photographs. One can find substantial information about everything from anatomy, the physics of flight, how to attract backyard birds, instructions for building feeders and birdhouses, courtship rites, and dealing with predators, to choosing and using binoculars. The "Identifying Birds" section (which limits itself to North American and Island birds) begins with a well-done explanation of how to identify a bird and provides bird silhouettes and explanations of terminology. Each identification entry includes a color illustration of the bird as well as characteristics, voice, nest, and a location map. The book concludes with a "Birder's Resource Guide" (including association addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and Web sites). Done with the attractiveness and style of programs produced by its parent organization, The Discovery Channel, this one-volume compendium provides a wealth of information in an appealing, clear manner.

Review

A superb bird book -- The Discovery Channel's "Birds," is one of the best bird books ever. Period. No question about it. Forget the fact that it only has 192 pages and that the entire book fits into an oversized coat pocket. In fact, that's the purpose of this wonderful "Explore Your World Handbook," one in a series of such publications.

"Birds" is for everybody, from seasoned birders to newcomers who are fascinated with our feathered friends. -- The Washington Times, July 21, 1999
