With lots of beautiful ink-and-watercolor drawings, diagrams, and color photos on each double-page spread, this large-size volume in the new Field Guides series, originally published in Spain, encourages readers to watch birds, write about them, and draw them. The style is chatty and informal, but most of the type is small and in italics, which may be designed to resemble a handwritten notebook, but isn't easy to read. For young people content to begin their outdoor experiences in the library, however, this book will be fun to browse, and its pages are packed with fascinating details about beaks, feathers, feeding, flight, courtship, migrations, and more. About the Author

Maria Angeles Julivert was born in Bogota and now lives in Barcelona. A biologist, she has worked on the computerization of the Ornithological and Vertebrates collection of the Zoological Museum in Barcelona. She also has worked as a technical advisor on various encyclopedias about wild animals and dinosaurs and on a dictionary of biology for Larousse.

Color photos, drawings, and a 'handwritten notebook' approach turn BIRDS into something special: a field guide kids can use to easily learn about birds and their identification. The emphasis on observation goes beyond identification, though, to cover the science of bird flight, natural history, and physiology. A lovely, different kind of children's guide.
