Ages 4-8. Originally published in France, this small square book is part of a handsomely designed First Discovery series, which introduces biology and other information to young children. The simple, fact-filled text about birds' beaks, claws, feathers, nests, feeding, and flight is realistically illustrated with sharp, glowingly colored pictures on strong white paper. The spiral-bound pages make ingenious use of brightly painted transparencies that reveal surprising changes and connections as you turn the pages. The page on flight has a transparency that lifts up to reveal a diagram of the bird's lightweight skeleton. The page on camouflage shows a ptarmigan with feathers that blend with its surroundings. A final double-page spread shows birds flying south in autumn--crows, geese, storks, and swallows--each group in its own formation. Hazel Rochman

She is best known, however, for being the author and creator of the Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo book series. Well, I ordered a used book & it looked used! Nevertheless, I needed something with large colorful pictures for summer camp (ages 6-8) and this book had wonderful pictures that the children enjoyed. They LOVED looking at the overlays and having me flip them back & forth (like the one with the bird getting a worm from a tree then feeding it to the babies). It had a lot of information for such a little book. The 24 children sat on the floor at my feet while I read it so that everyone could see the pictures. Not good for a large class of children sitting in their desks. I great teaching tool!
