Good book, lacking detail,
By bondservant "Jeff" (Nashville, TN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birds Of Florida Field Guide (Paperback)
Sure, it lacks a bit of detail that I would like about the birds. Sure some of the pictures do not seem to be that clear but shesh, this is field guide. This is small enough to carry with you and the color coding is awesome! If you are new to birding, like me, then get the book.
You can always buy books that have every little detail about the bird. Use those books to study the bird before you go out. This is for when you are out and go "What bird was that?". It was almost all brown... so go to the brown section. I now have two of his books. Will get more as I go to that state. -Jeff www.avvedutiphotography.com

These are great for beginners and experienced birders,
By Doug (South Bend, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birds Of Florida Field Guide (Paperback)
I have used a copy of Birds of Michigan for several years. I'll be in Orlando and Jacksonville this year and so got this for my trip. Many birds that occur in Florida are, no doubt, not included butwith several hundred documented species, it would be impossible to make a pocket guide like this with every potentially present bird.
My ONLY complaint about this series is that some birds are hard to find because they have several dominant colors and you might have to look in two or three sections to find it. But that's easier than scanning through 200-300 pages in my Peterson guide.

Must have for backyard birding,
By Tangelo "Tangelo" (Jacksonville, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birds Of Florida Field Guide (Paperback)
I purchased this guide on a recommendation from an employee at a local bird fanciers store. I was skeptical if it would be useful at first, but now I cannot imagine birdwatching without it. I have always fed the birds but could only identify a few of the most well known species. With this little guide, I have been able to successfully identify every bird that has visited my feeder or fountain; even birds that I had never heard of that were migrating through my area! The photographs are full page and excellent and there is a written description to help further confirm that you have correctly identified your visitor. Not only that, but it tells you what time of year each species is in each area of Florida and what each bird likes to eat and its preferred habitat. I have actually used the book in reverse meaning that I have put out specific foods and habitat to attract species that I would like to see more. The guide contains more than just backyard birds. There are entries for shore birds and birds of prey that are seen in Florida. I am sure there are some rare birds that live in the woods that are not included, but every bird that I have ever seen I have been able to find quite easily in this book. For the added enjoyment of actually knowing which birds I am watching, I feel this guide is definitely worth buying and keeping handy.

THE reference book on birds,
By
This review is from: Birds Of Florida Field Guide (Paperback)
I was in my favorite specialty store on birds a year ago and was told by the owner that this is THE reference book on birds that is sold the most in their shop. A comfortable size to keep on a table or ledge of a window, the pictures are very good. I've used it to identify a pair of red-tailed hawks that a family of crows was going after (it helped that I had a pair of binoculars and the book showed a picture of what the bird looked like while soaring). Who'd have thought four crows were that brave but I witnessed it.
I've used the book to determine two species of woodpeckers that we have. I seem to have a mental block identifying this bird! I've also read up on bluebirds and we now have three pairs that live near our home. The most amazing thing that has happened is that whenever one of our adult kids visit and sees me looking out the window in the morning they want to know what birds we have. If I am not sure one of them will pick up this reference book and tell me what they think. The hobby has spread to their houses. One now has two birdbaths in her yard and the other lets me know what is living in her hedge. Even our twenty-year-old son lets me know what he sees in our yard. Of course, my young grandsons just love to see any birds in general. So parents, it is never too late to start this hobby. Packed with wonderful basic information, colorful pictures of males (and females if they look different) and little tidbits of knowledge that many may not know, it is a enjoyable book. Whether you use it at home, take it to the park or pack it up when you head to the beach, the facts it contains will help you. If nothing else the comfortable size makes it easy to drop in a purse or carry in a large pocket and should remind you that you are not alone.

Great for Kids and Beginners,
By

I would give this book a 5 star rating because it's so quick and easy to look up a new bird when you see one. I am a kindergarten teacher and I bought this guide to keep by the window in my classroom that is overlooking our bird feeder. The 5 and 6 year old children can identify a bird by its prominent color, then flip to the section in the guide of that same color and browse until they spot the bird in question. I liked the book so much that I bought another one to keep at home!

I gave this little book to my husband as a B'day gift. We walk every morning and neither one of us could identify the birds. He feels that the pictures are true to life and we have come to appreciate our winged friends.

My 4th grader used this in conjuction with Jeannie Fullbrights Apologia Zoology 1. This is a wonderful book and it is very easy to use and is laid out by color. You can identify a bird quickly with this book and it gave my daughter a love of the different breeds. The book also has many helpful notes like if the bird is a native or migratory and more. It's the perfect identification book for any age.

Very convenient bird book,

Birds of Florida is a very convenient book for new birders. Its organization by the color of bird makes it easy to look up that white, black, brown, blue or red bird whose identity is a mystery. When you get to the entry, there is useful description of identifying characteristics of adult male and female birds, juveniles and the adult bird in breeding season, as well as a comparison to the bird it most resembles. The book's color photos are beautiful and its small size permits you to tuck it into a pocket while hiking. I recommend this book highly.
