I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she wanted a "field guide" like her older sisters when exploring our 45 acres of woods. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. (For example, the myth about the stripes on the wooly bear caterpillar in relation to the length of winter) It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals and tips on studying nature in general. What we enjoy most is that many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as Caterpillars,Bugs, and Butterflies. They are separated into sections dealing with each type. At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. This particular one is a little different in that instead of having three sections, it is one section dealing with each type of bird, incorporating their nests and eggs, with the projects interspersed throughout. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects. I highly recommend this book and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it.

5.0 out of 5 stars awsome book!, April 10, 2001

Birds, Nest ,and Eggs Mel Boring Reading Level 4.8

Birds, Nests, and Eggs is an excellent book. It is great for a book report or just to read for fun. It is about birds and what kind of tree they nest in. It also tells you what kind of calls they make. It shows you how long it takes for the eggs to hatch and when they learn how to fly. They show you how the birds trick you. They show you how to do some experiments. Again I strongly recommend it.

I was so glad I bought this book for my kids. My 3 year old and I look at it nearly every night (it's his first choice). After only a few times, he was able to help me name all of the birds. He has even recognized one or two in our yard. It's an easy read, with great illustrations, a great book for beginning bird watchers!

I've purchased most of the books in this series so far & plan to purchase the remainder. The illustrations are stunning. They are excellent non-fiction books. Highly recommended for our generation of video-game-crazed nature deficit children.

we love this book. It is fun. The illustrations are really good, so when you see something outside, you can actually look it up in the book and find out what it is! Starts great discussions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reading for 3rd and 4th graders, December 26, 2010

Each of the sections on birds featured in this informative book are interesting to the young reader. I teach a class of 3rd and 4th graders and they seemed to find it quite fascinating with facts about the bird as well as its eggs and habitat. I am all for a book that encourages a young child to read on their own what could be made to be a boring subject in a text book.

my nieces have a birdfeeder and i gave them this book plus their very own binoculurs. we had a blast looking at the birds and then using the book to have them figure out which bird they were seeing. love the book. nice big pictures, big print and space for the girls to color and write their own things.
only reason why it didnt get 5 stars is because i wanted more birds in the book

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the series, November 13, 2011
This review is from: Birds, Nests & Eggs (Take Along Guides) (Paperback)
This was our family's first introduction to the Mel Boring series. We loved this book. We did a unit on birds and birdwatching, and I picked it up from the library not expecting too much. But it was great.

Not only did it cover almost all the backyard birds in our region, but it had just the right amount of information for a little kid to learn about each bird--the food it eats, how big it is, the kind of nest it makes, and what its eggs look like. The color illustrations of the bird itself are pretty good--although they are not actual photos, which would have been nice. But my kids loved opening up to the two-page spread of the bird we were learning that day and hearing about it.

And the couple experiments were actually doable! A rare find in a science book!

We have K-4 in our house, but the youngest kids could not read the text alone--it is about a second or third grade level. And there is not too much text per page, but it is all non-fiction, reference text. It's a kids reference guide to birds, not a story or something they would just read through on their own (unless they love birds!). None of this detracts from the book, it's just something to be aware of. It worked well for the ages we have in our house.

We bought "More Fun with Nature" which includes this book, but I kind of wish I had purchased it separately. We used it so much and took it outside, and it would have been nice to have it as a stand-alone since "MFWN" is heavier.

We added Dover Coloring Backyard Birds for our littlest kids to color as we read the pages, and we added Common Birds and Their Songs to study birdcalls, and we had a great unit!
