The Birds of Ohio and The Birds of Illinois are both magnificently illustrated by William Zimmerman (Wildfowl of North America). Zimmermann's work has frequently been compared to Audubon's. But in place of Audubon's romanticism, Zimmerman offers greater technical skill; his "comfortable" birds appear to be on the verge of taking wing from the page. These are splendid works--fine paintings and an authoritative text. They hold the promise of attaining collector status (and value). Every collection with a birding interest should acquire immediately.
