Book Description

September 18, 1997 Images of Asia
The birds of Sulawesi are unique. In fact, nearly 100 species are found nowhere else in the world, making this area a magnet for bird-watchers. This is the first illustrated book for birds of Sulawesi, providing a thorough introduction for professional and amateur ornithologists. Non-technical descriptions and 142 color illustrations enable readers to identify the most representative birds of the region, and they familiarize the reader with the full variety of birds, their distinguishing features and behavior, and habitat. An appendix lists over 270 resident land birds found in different parts of the Sulawesi faunal region.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a lovely little book. . . . The illustrations are of a high quality and Derek's descriptions are readable, lively and capture his own field sense of the species. Some of the vocalizations are new for the bird literature. . . . Even if you have no plans to ever visit Sulawesi, this is a beautiful book and an interesting introduction to the island."--IBIS

"The authors provide an introduction to this remarkable wealth of birds, both for the dedicated ornithologist and the interested layman. The simple descriptions and color illustrations assist in the identification of the most representative and colorful birds of this interesting region. Written in a non-technical style, the descriptions familiarize the reader with the full variety of birds, their distinguishing features and behavior, voice, and habitat."--Indiana Audubon Quarterly

3.0 out of 5 stars good, but wanting book, May 13, 1999

This review is from: The Birds of Sulawesi (Images of Asia) (Hardcover)
although this is a landmark in that it is the very first book published on birds of sulawesi, it is incomplete and rather amatuerish. the illustrations are fairly good and the text is okay, but a book like this should list and descrtibe all the birds that occur on sulawesi, endemic (which there are nearly 100) and widespread. There is no mantion of the sulawesi drongo Dicrurus montanus or the Lompobattang Flycatcher (Ficedula bonthiana. the style seems as though it was intended for children rather than serious birdwatchers.
