Birds of Tennessee,
By Ostara "MyBooks" (Opelika, AL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birds of Tennessee Field Guide (Paperback)
I bought this for my Mom in Tennesse; however, I'm sure it is as good as Birds of Alabama. It has the birds listed by color throughout the book then by name in alpha order in the back. The pictures of the birds is worth the price of the book. They are excellent. Most all of the birds have a female/male that has different coloring - that is shown as well. The descriptions are outstanding: nest size, juvenile coloring, migration, summer and winter habitat and so much more. A great book for bird watchers.

My wife recently put out some bird feeders in our back yard and she loves seeing all of the birds coming into our yard to eat. There were a couple of birds that she didn't recognize and not being native to Tennessee, this book really came in handy in identifying them. The size of the book is perfect and the pictures are great.

This is a wonderful resource for identifying different types of birds. It is sorted by color, which makes it very easy to use for the novice, or even children. My grandchildren enjoy watching my feeders when they visit - they always go straight for this book, so much so I ordered BIRDS OF INDIANA Field Guide for them to use at home.

This is a great field birding book. I am really pleased with the arrangement of the book, as it helps me to quickly find the bird I am looking for.

This book has GREAT photos and some interesting commentary by the author in each species segment. But it is lacking because very obvious items of information were left out. For example, the entry for Lesser Yellowlegs shows the image of Tennessee colored to indicate it is only there during migration - but nowhere does it say WHEN that migration is. Further - it goes on at length describing the Lesser Yellowlegs' nests - and then notes it only nests in Central Alaska - which is a very looooonng way from birders in Tennessee. The space was wasted on that useless information when something important could have been there. Also, almost none of the species entries suggest even one specific spot in Tennessee that birders might look for the species. This book could have really benefitted from a large dose of Common Sense.

This book is a joy to use. The pictures are quality & the information is good. Also the size makes it good for carrying into the field. The are a few flaws. I would have preferred that he give the approx sound of all the birds' voices. Also he skipped a few. One I know of is the Chuck-Will's-Widow. I heard that one in Humphreys County only a few years ago. All this aside, this is a very worthwhile book to have for people who enjoy watching the local birds as I do. I have already used it to I.D. several birds feeding in the yard.

This book has provided information specific to my area and has lead to the discovery of several "new to us" feathered friends. Nicely written.
