Birds of the Texas Hill Country,
By A Customer
This review is from: Birds of the Texas Hill Country (Corrie Herring Hooks Series) (Paperback)
Birds of the Texas Hill Country is not a field guide and anyone reading the description of the book should realize that. It is a status and distribution work that covers all of the birds recorded from the Edwards Plateau region of Texas. It was a lengthy introduction that is excellent. My favorite part is the section about early ornithological investigations. Anyone truly interested in the avifauna of this region will want a copy of this book.

Why did I buy this book?,

I waited for months for this book to be published. Once I received it, I couldn't figure out what to do with it. It does not help to identify birds. It has almost no pictures. I wanted a book to help me identify Texas Hill Country birds. This is not the book.

I am just an amateur bird watcher. I just wanted to know the names of the many birds in my area. The book does not have enough pictures to be helpful to me. It is agreat book but for people with more knowledge than myself.

Finally a book that provides some meat on the distribution of the birds of the Hill Country of Texas. This is not a identification guide or a bird finding guide but is a book that provides the reader with good seasonal distribution dialog on all species recorded in this area of Texas. The introduction is great. This book can also serve as an annotated checklist as well. The author's knowledge on the region is evident and I made use of that knowledge during my visit to Texas in the spring of 2002. I reccomend this book to anyone serious about birding in Texas.

This book is not a field guide and anyone who read the description of it would know that before purchasing it. What it does cover is the status and distribution of birds on the Edwards Plateau. It is the only book that covers this topic and it is clear that the author is very familiar with the area. The introduction is fairly lengthy and is a real bonus for a book of this type. Anyone wanting to learn more about the avifauna of this region will want a copy of this book.

General book on birds of the Hill Country of Texas,

As has been said before this book is not a field guide but nor is it a book of science either as Lockwood does not review the literature nor provide any details as to why so and so a species is considered common, uncommon etc. For the lay visitor its a great addition to your library but do not consider it your answer to a good ornithological treatment nor field guide to the region. |
