5.0 out of 5 stars Neat Bird Guide, July 18, 2003
This review is from: Birds of Virginia Field Guide (Paperback)
I bought this book originally to draw the pictures of the birds I found inside. The pictures are wonderful....much better than most field guides. The information provided is also excellent - it says where in VA and when you will see each particular bird, along with details of their feathers, nests, eggs, and more. Each bird has a paragraph dedicated to specific information about that particular bird. It also includes a similar species reference. Very useful and interesting for those looking to learn a little more about the birds in their own backyards. The index also includes a list for you to check off which birds you've seen. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn a little more about VA birds.

Nice pictures on one page with the facts on the facing page. But contains only 140 of the 425 birds recorded found in Virginia. Too many missing birds for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a quick reference, February 20, 2005

Nice little guide for our area. It shows pictures of both the male and female on the left hand of the page and on the right has the decription of the bird - a small map (with the key right there too), size, nesting, egg info, migration, food, and similar species. This is all just a really quick snap shot of info then there's "Stan's Notes" where the author gives a brief paragraph of a fun fact or two about the bird and where its found or habits, things like that. Nice book to have on hand. I keep mine near the window where I watch the feeders - especially in spring and fall - when there might be a new visitor that I'm not familiar with or I just want a very quick refresher on a bird.
