Superseded for Central Africa,

This review is from: Birds of Western and Central Africa: (Princeton Illustrated Checklists) (Paperback)
While comprehensive as a checklist, this book has now been superseded by two excellent books for Central Africa - Birds of Sub-saharan Africa (Ian Sinclair) and Birds of Western Africa (Borrow, Demey)
Drawings are significantly inferior compared to the other two books. Being a checklist information is extremely limited compared to the other books which are genuine field guides. Only possible advantage is size.

Although far from complete, this book has been very helpful in identifying species of birds I have seen here in Niger, Africa.
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of books on birds of this region to choose from. There are many birds here that are not found in the book but at least I am able to categorize the birds into distinguishable species. But the illustrations are beautiful and descriptions are well defining. For the price, this book is well worth the money if you wish to observe birds in Africa.

This book is very well done and makes it easy to look up species. I'm going to Africa soon to photograph wildlife, and this book will help prepare me well to know what I'm shooting. It is also small enough I may take it along in my backpack.

A fine pocket-sized guide,

This is a great guide for all of the wonderful species across western and central Africa (a very underbirded part of the world!). This guide is ideal as a field companion to another guide with more written information describing each species (which could stay in the hotel/vehicle). Having trekked through Ecuador with the excellent but cumbersome birds of Ecuador, I can definitely speak to the advantages of a pocket guide for tropical excursions!!!
In contrast to a previous reviewer, I find the illustrations to be very good and consistent for a small guide. The plates are reasonably well spaced out given the size of the guide and the range maps are easy to read and show boundaries of various countries. Having used and enjoyed Van Perlo's checklist of Birds of Mexico and Central America, I find this West African guide to be even better- sharper pictures and easier to use layout. |
