I'm not a 'professional' bird watcher; I enjoy recognizing and following birds that I encounter at home and in my travels. This book is very helpful in naming birds unfamiliar to me. The photographs are so much better than artists' renditions in most other bird books because they are, well, photos. The characteristics of a specific bird are immediately recognizable and that's what I'm looking for in a birding guide.
Some reviews have seemed to quibble about one thing or another that to me are immaterial; here are clear and accurate images of birds. When we traveled to Arizona and came across birds that weren't familiar, it was so easy to pull out "Birds of Western North America" and identify them quickly. I like the small photos at the top of the page that help to quickly find a category of bird based on similar physical characteristics.
Sorry, I'm not an expert, but enjoy the book. Great comprehensive representation of western birds and easy to use.

This was the best bird book I've ever found. It has male and female photos and on the opposing page, all the info about the bird...+ wonderful photographs of the birds.

This is maybe the most attractive photographic field guide to birds of Western North America, mainly because of the relatively large pictures, but I personally don't like the way photographs are displayed. I strongly recommend the Smithonian Field Guide to the Birds of (entire) North America which also depicts the species occuring only in the southernmost parts and many geographic variations, with location and month when the bird was photoraphed in the caption, instead.

Totally love the big, vivid, beautiful photography. The great photo detail in this guide makes it easier to correctly identify birds in the field.

The book is very good - the pictures are beautiful. You will find all of North America birds, their habitat, and where they live.

I just received both books!

I figured I would spend a little extra on the hardcover versions.

The spines on both books were coming apart. Sent both back today, with a quick glance at the photos.
