Finally....out-foxed the sly squirrel!,

It's been up in the garden for 1 week and I haven't seen any squirrels attempting to 'break the code' on this bird feeder!
The last "squirrel proof" one we had purchased was finally assaulted from hanging up side down to circumvent the doors to the birdseed from closing shut from his weight....sagacious little creature, The only drawback is that the larger birds cannot get inside to sit on the perches where the seed is stored, but we are mainly attracting the small finches and they love the feeder! And some seed falls to the bottom where the larger birds can get at it. It's definitely a 'better mouse-trap' in the squirrel fighting battle of the bird feeders!

I feel compelled to write my first review cuz this item should have at least 4 stars.
I'm back buying my second. This is easily the most attractive of all the feeders I've seen so far and I'd like to address the two negative reviews. I've had this feeder for over a year now and we have a ton of grey squirrels but none have ever figured out how to get seed from it. When it is shaken, the seed mostly drops in the tray. That said....the population of red tree squirrels is increasing recently and they are able to climb right through the caging. They sit inside and will even let me walk up to the feeder at times. I don't have a problem with these small squirrel, it's the greys that are destructive. And lastly another review mentioned plastic hanger......it's actually metal wire with a plastic coating. Buy it......you'll love it.

this bird feeder maybe squirrel proof if you mount it on a pole but if you hang it from a tree the squirrel just jumps onit and shakes it till the seed falls out on the ground also its not large bird proof they hang on the side of the cage and just flick the seed out onto the ground until its empty then they eat it off the ground with the squirrels

Was online to order my second feeder of this make/model, read the other reviews, and decided to write my own. I have owned this model for a few months. It works pretty well, all things considered. We have four 5 lb yankee doodle flippers hung (which we love despite their limitations), and use this model for our chicadees, finches, titmouse, carolina wrens, and nuthatches. Woodpeckers (red breasted and downeys) also periodically try to use it.
It does take a while for birds to learn how to feed from it. Starlings, grackels and mourning doves (trash birds) do perch on the sides when the other feeder (the yankee flippers) are empty. But the point is that the small birds can get at this feeder when the other feeders are being hit by cardinals, blue jays, woodpechers and all the trash birds. Our squirrels do not hit this at all, and they don't shake it, either. Even our racoons have not attempted to drag it away. And this feeder has more aesthetics than most of them. You are kidding yourself if you believe there is a perfect (squirrel-proof, racoon-proof, trash-bird proof) feeder on the market. Some critters are smarter than others in their breed and they will figure out how to subvert the 'system' to get at the seed. This is an accommodation with nature. So while this Birdscapes Preserve is not perfect, it does what we want it to do, $22 is a very good price, and it even gives the songbirds some shelter in rain. That is why I am back here buying another one.

This feeder took a few days for the birds to venture inside of the squirrel-proof barrier, but now they are used to it & it's fun to watch them enjoying the seeds without the squirrels upstaging them. At least so far!

We got this feeder 2 weeks ago to replace an older one that was being raided by a very persistent squirrel. It seemed well built, was easy to fill, and looked better than most squirrel-proof feeders.
But after a week, no birds were using this feeder, and I began to feel like I had wasted my money. Then one male Goldfinch figured it out. The next day, his mate was feeding. After a few more days, four pairs of Goldfinches and several other birds were using the feeder. As far as we can tell, the squirrels haven't gotten into it yet. Just be patient, and the birds will figure it out.

If you don't want squirrels to eat seeds intended for birds I'd advise you to avoid this product. As advertised, squirrels can't get at the seeds. Unfortunately, it's also bird proof. The wire meshing is so dense that birds can't get in to access the seeds. I'm looking out my window. While nearby feeders that are accessible to squirrels are swarmed by hungry birds of various sizes and colors, the new feeder hangs alone, full of seeds.

Grackle Paradise,

I purchased this feeder to use in Sanibel, Florida. It was designed to keep out squirrels and large birds. We have no squirrels but the large birds have not been put off and can empty the feeder in half a day. We call this feeder the 'Grackle Cafe' and will be taking it down.

Why would anyone make a metal cage surround and then use a plastic hanger???????
I do like this product, but do not expect the hanger to last as long as the feeder.

I love this bird feeder because it lives up to the reviews I read on it before purchasing; it truly does keep the squirrels out and only small bird can enter to feed. The bottom tray keeps the seeds from spilling. It's well constructed, too. The reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is because it only has 4 perches, not 6.
