For Small Birds Only,
By Historken (Fort Dodge, Iowa USA) - See all my reviews

It is strange that the feeder instructions urges one to use Cardinal food--sunflower seeds--when I don't believe it is large enough for a Cardinal to land on. "My" Cardinals have eaten the spillings from Chickadees but haven't ventured to try to land on such a tiny ledge. It is easy to fill and looks good. Our local squirrel has leaped upon it but slid off as it is apparently too small for it too. Even the Chickadees can barely keep their balance.; they pluck the seeds and then eat them off the ground.

I bought this feeder several weeks ago and love it! I've got mine mounted on a shepherd's hook. It's sturdy and holds a good amount of seed. There is a tendency for seed to spill from the bottom, but our ground-feeding birds clean that up so no problem there. We've had chickadees, finches, cardinals and sparrows at this feeder. The ledge is narrow, as another reviewer mentioned, but for me this was actually a good thing as it's the one feeder that the crows can't commandeer away from the smaller birds. I'm getting ready to buy a second one.

Good looking for humans and birds. Easy to fill , except that the tray has broken twice while filling in cold weather.

I keep this feeder in the tree in front of our front door, and have stopped keeping food in it - the large holes along the ledge (where the food comes out) meant that every time a crow or jay landed on the ledge, the food spilled out - and I wish I'd known then that certain kinds of bird seed actually sprouts into weeds. Anyway, it's really cute as a decorative piece more than anything - otherwise, if you're a hard-core bird lover, I'd stick with something a bit more realistic for actual bird feeding (and not weed-growing).

This feeder was a huge disappointment. The cover is hard to attach. It take several tries to get the grooves and grippers to match, especially when its no longer new. Lots of seeds spill in the process. After just a few months the color of the plastic (the entire thing is plastic) started to fade. The cover has warped a bit making it even harder to close securely that before.
The ring to hang it from is short so it's difficult to hang unless you add chain. The bottom serves as a perch and is very narrow and is part of the base- no drainage holes. Rain collects in it, the seeds get all wet and stick together and rot. Water gets into the storage area and the seeds in there clump so they don't come out for the birds. Then they rot and /or sprout. I have to take it down and clean it out each time it rains. Squirrels love it. Birds and owners, not so much. I would not buy it another and do not recommend it at all.

Looks nice but doesn't stand the rigors of the weather,

I had two of these for 3-4 years. They looked great and got lots of complements. Large birds like blue jays, make the seed spill all over. Eventually, they started to crack. I am looking for substitute now.

Berkshire...loved by birds at wildlife habitat,

We got our first feeder by Berkshire as a freebe sent to my husband as a premium. The birds loved it. Gale force winds last March caused the bottom to come off and our dog, a very large dog, chewed on it for a time until I discovered what had happened. There was a puncture in the side about the size of a quarter which I filled in with epoxy. It's still in use to this day. Branches very near the feeder are often seen holding as many as two dozen birds from American goldfinch to cardinals, pine warblers, blue jay, even a bluebird. So I bought a second feeder before those hungry birds gang up on me! For a video of a busy feeder see: [...]

The squirrels nocked this feeder apart the first day. It's lightweight and flimsy construction relegated it to the trash already.

Our birds love this feeder and our Cardinals have no trouble with the size of the perch.
Many birds congregate at this and our other feeder (Cherry Valley Feeder Cafe Bird Feeder)and one bird tends to eat "sloppily", providing it's fellows as well as larger doves and Grackles to dine on the ground. I also find it very attractive compared to other one mentioned above.

This feeder is awesome. I screwed the feeder to a 4/4 post. They look like lights. You can take the handle off. What makes it even more better is the security from it being a "screw" top. I originally purchased two, then bought three more. I will be ordering more, for future uses (in case I can't find them anymore). Neihgbors think they are outdoor lighting. The birds have no problem accessing the sunflower seeds (even through the ledges are rather short). I got the 4/4 post in 6 feet, put them in the ground, they are painted the same chocklate color of the bird feeders, looks great. Image shown doesn't do the feeder justice, it is a nice size.
