I sold Birkenstocks in Seattle's U-district for seven years; the Birkenstock company still makes the same superlative footwear. Oftentimes eschewed by fashion-conscious hipsters, allow me to answer a few questions:

    "Ew[...] They're so wiiiiide!"
(Not really a question, but a frequent comment) Yes, they are wide. Birkenstocks passively support the architecture of your feet from underneath, just as your bare foot would be supported walking on a complient surface like earth or sand. Conventional shoes support your foot by binding them, rendering them less mobile. Your foot is a dynamic structure that NEEDS to move, in order to function correctly.

"How come they fit so loooong?"
Birkenstocks are sized to fit the three arches of your feet: The medial arch (the largest arch typically referred to in the phrase "good arch support"), the metatarsal arch (the pocket between the ball of your foot and your pinkie toe), and the lateral arch ( a lesser known structure on the outside of your foot, in front of your heel). Because the Birkenstock flexes, at the cost of room at the ends of the footbed, a properly sized fit includes some extra room in front of the toes and behind the heel (in a normally-proportioned foot). This maintains correct support under your arches, providing a dynamic balance while you walk.

    "They're so haaaaard!"
Yes, Birkenstocks are firm under the sole of your foot. The footbed molds to the individual shape of YOUR feet over time, providing an even support across the entirety of your foot. Conventional shoes accomodate the hard points on the soles of your feet with padding that squshes under pressure, but doesn't actually support the structures of your feet.

I wear these in our business-casual office and my feet are happy throughout the day. I was a little concerned about "forest black" but they are a black color, no hint of green that I can see. Look great with my black slacks.

Have you ever had a pair of shoes that fit you so well, you would slip them off for a few minutes every now and then, just so you could feel how good it felt to slip them back on? Well...these are those shoes.

So... I had a pair of these when I was in high school. In 1995. So... 17 years ago. These shoes lasted forever. I actually eventually LOST them during our last move. It's ok, I got my moneys worth! Plus I was tired of the color, the pair I had were a dark brown.

I just got these in the redwood color with the soft footbed. I went for the soft footbed specifically because I recall, even after so many years, the rough break in period. These are comfy out of the box with the soft foot bed! Like a slipper. However I believe, I have no proof but I believe, that the soft foot bed will negatively impact the longevity of the shoe. I know the rubber on the bottom is replaceable and to some degree the cork is too from what I understand(I never had to replace the cork on my old pair though, if you replace the rubber before you hit the cork AND keep the cork sealed, you shouldn't need to) but I have no idea how the soft foot bed will affect repair or replaceability. My general guess is that it will wear out and need repair sooner. The redwood is a lovely color. I like it a lot because it's colorful enough to be interesting, but not so bright that it will clash or stick out.

Sizing. I'll be honest, they are full of *you know what* on sizing. Back in 1995, prior to having two kids, the smallest size I could find in the store (this was pretty much pre-internet, I could buy it at the store or not buy it at all, ordering was difficult as the shoes were made in germany) was a 36. Back then, I was told a 36 was about equivalent to a 6-6.5. I was a 5. I purchased them anyway and they were very big on me. I didn't care, I just wore big fat socks with them. Ok, well time went on, I had two kids and my feet got larger. I am now actually a size 6-6.5.

I love Birkenstock shoes and wear them almost every day. I need really good support, and I get that with Birkenstocks. This is my second pair of black Boston shoes, and I bought them here instead of the shoe store because the price was so much better. If you are new to these shoes, I recommend that you try them on in a shoe store first so you know your correct size. I do not have a narrow foot, but I buy the narrow in Birkenstock shoes - their narrow is like a regular in the USA. I don't know if the shoes will fit you if you have really narrow feet.

Accept no imitations, including Betula by Birkenstock. Nothing compares to these shoes, and they are well worth the price. Consider it an investment, because they will last for years. Despite what the other reviewer had to say, I consider them "in style" and predict they will remain so for years to come.

I ordered the Boston clog in the Tobacco color for my husband. He has never worn clogs in his life or worn any Birkenstock products for that matter. I am a lifelong lover of both clogs and Birkenstock's products. My husband is a soccer player and often has problems with his feet due to the fact that most soccer players like to wear their soccer boots on the small side because they think it gives them a better feel for the ball...what it really gives them is ingrown toenails. He has been in pain for weeks. I ordered these without telling him because I knew he would take one look at them and say he was not wearing a clog. My theory was that once he put them on he would love them so much it wouldn't matter that it was a Birkenstock clog...that is exactly what happened. He put them on last night when he came home from work and wore them until he went to bed. Then he actually wore them to work today. He loves them. I ordered a size 45 M. He wears a size 11.5 in most shoes. His feet are on the wider side of average and he has a very high instep. The 45 M was perfect for him. I like the Tobacco color. It is a bit lighter than I thought it would be, but it looked nice with the olive green chinos he wore today.
