I cannot wait for them to break in in a week or so and be as comfortable as I know Birkenstocks can be.

I sold Birkenstocks in Seattle's U-district for seven years; the Birkenstock company still makes the same superlative footwear. Oftentimes eschewed by fashion-conscious hipsters, allow me to answer a few questions:

    "Ew[...] They're so wiiiiide!"
(Not really a question, but a frequent comment) Yes, they are wide. Birkenstocks passively support the architecture of your feet from underneath, just as your bare foot would be supported walking on a complient surface like earth or sand. Conventional shoes support your foot by binding them, rendering them less mobile. Your foot is a dynamic structure that NEEDS to move, in order to function correctly.

"How come they fit so loooong?"
Birkenstocks are sized to fit the three arches of your feet: The medial arch (the largest arch typically referred to in the phrase "good arch support"), the metatarsal arch (the pocket between the ball of your foot and your pinkie toe), and the lateral arch ( a lesser known structure on the outside of your foot, in front of your heel). Because the Birkenstock flexes, at the cost of room at the ends of the footbed, a properly sized fit includes some extra room in front of the toes and behind the heel (in a normally-proportioned foot). This maintains correct support under your arches, providing a dynamic balance while you walk.

    "They're so haaaaard!"
Yes, Birkenstocks are firm under the sole of your foot. The footbed molds to the individual shape of YOUR feet over time, providing an even support across the entirety of your foot. Conventional shoes accomodate the hard points on the soles of your feet with padding that squshes under pressure, but doesn't actually support the structures of your feet.

I purchased the Boston Clog in the summer of 2000, have worn it every year since then, and am happy to report that it is still the most comfortable shoe I possess. Since many of the other reviews here have praised its comfort, I will briefly pass over a few of the problems that will probably occur over long-term wear.

First, after about a year of wear, the outsole began to detach itself from the rest of the clog. This was easily fixed with some shoe glue that I purchased at a shoe store. Since applying it in 2001 or so, I have not had any further problems with the outsole coming off.

Second, as mentioned in one review, the part of the outsole where your foot hits the ground most often will wear out fastest. This is to be expected. Nevertheless, after close to seven year's worth of wear, the outsole is still holding up quite well, the heel being the only place where there is no grip pattern left. Still, plenty of outsole remains.

Finally, about a year ago the leather lining of the footbed started to detach itself from the cork underneath the heel. Again, any good adhesive will solve the problem. This time I used super glue--problem solved.

Overall, the leather reflects seven year's worth of use, but it is still holding up very well, both on the footbed, and on the entire upper part. All things considered, I have worn a lot of shoes in the past seven years, many of them overpriced European brands fabled for comfort (Ecco, Camper, Clarks) but the Boston Clog has outlasted all of them in terms of durability and comfort. I highly recommend this quality shoe.

Birkenstock does indeed make "high-arch" shoes. I own several pair, and I live in them because I have problem feet. When I saw these clogs called "high-arch" I was ecstatic! But, they are NOT high-arch Birkenstocks, which have extra high arches, with the words HIGH ARCH actually printed in the shoes. So, these have to go back. What a disappointment!
Yes, I know I can get the real deal from Birkenstock, but in one color only. I was so excited that I could (I thought) get them in different colors.
Amazon -- please change your description for these clogs.

I recently bought these shoes and they are soooo comfortable! I got the ones with the soft sole and it makes a tremendous difference. From the first minute I put them on, it was like they became part of my foot! I don't even realize that I'm wearing them! No break-in required! It's also important to make sure you get the right size and establish whether you have a narrow or regular foot before you buy them.

Have you ever had a pair of shoes that fit you so well, you would slip them off for a few minutes every now and then, just so you could feel how good it felt to slip them back on? Well...these are those shoes.

I had a bad case of Prima Fasciatis (my arches were burning like fire!), plus heel spurs. Not a good combination when you work retail.
After a foot doctor told me I had high arches, and I could get expensive inserts, and steroid shots for my bone spurs, I did research and found these. Now I can stand all day long with plenty of arch support, and my heel spurs no longer have me putting my full weight on them as a result. Love my Birks!!

I received these as a gift and after VERY little wear the upper parts ripped. The felt..on both shoes. I emailed the company and they would not repair or replace them. The soles and footbed look brand new and it makes me sad to have to throw away these comfy, barely worn shoes. Buy leather uppers I have several pairs of them and have never had issues.
