5.0 out of 5 stars moody and reflective
I bought this CD after hearing "Ghosts in the Graveyard" on a sampler CD. That song alone makes this worth purchasing. Its a somber reflection on life's limits and reminds us of that first time we became aware that things don't last forever. I was delighted to discover another gem once I had all the songs on the BR CD. The song describing Noah, his struggle...

1.0 out of 5 stars Bland, boring & banal
This album bored me to tears. The music lacks any interest. Most of the songs plod along at the same tempo. Half the songs on the album drag out longer than five minutes when a minute would do. There is nothing original here. It sounds like most of the stuff cluttering AAA radio these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars moody and reflective, July 17, 2001

I bought this CD after hearing "Ghosts in the Graveyard" on a sampler CD. That song alone makes this worth purchasing. Its a somber reflection on life's limits and reminds us of that first time we became aware that things don't last forever. I was delighted to discover another gem once I had all the songs on the BR CD. The song describing Noah, his struggle for hope against the risk of drowning is probably the best metaphoric communication of hope and doubt and faith that I have come across in several years. It is wonderful. Jeff is a significant talent. Not all the songs worked for me, but the ones that did made this CD a steal. This is an original voice with a depth to the lyrics that touches the experience of being human.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful piece of work, June 11, 2004

This album is simply spectacular. Driving songs like "That's Just About Right" and "Long Way to Go" will energize and excite you, while ballads like "Carnival Song" and "The Valley" will haunt you and pull you into Jeff Black's poetic landscape, and you won't want to leave. This is a singer/songwriter of amazing talent, and he deserves to be heard by everyone. If you like introspective, moving, melodic songs that inspire, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of a kind, May 11, 1999

Its great to hear a 50 minute cd from an artist that actually has 50 minutes of material. Much more than just a great song writer Jeff Black's performance is beyond reproach. End to end this is a beautiful, thought provoking work. Something tells me he has just as much material un recorded and the next time out he will be the one we hear playing his songs on the radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling music from the soul, August 28, 1998
This review is from: Birmingham Road (Audio CD)
This CD is one of those rare perfect sets. Every song is a winner. You get pulled in with the rockers, and then moved to your very roots by cuts like "The Valley". This is the way music should be. Beautiful spacy music that takes you to new places along with lyrics that are understandable and moving. Black's voice is a treasure. He takes it to the limit, but never stretches too far. This is bound to be a huge commercial success once he gets "discovered".

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good for prime time!, May 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Birmingham Road (Audio CD)
Jeff Black is too good for prime time! How else can you explain the fact that there's no follow up to this album for the ages. Some of the finest lyrics and weary vocals in the last decade and - amazingly - still flying way below the radar screens of the masses. Keep beating up the muse, Mr. Black, you have much to offer and an audience that greatly anticipates your next release!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock with texture., August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Birmingham Road (Audio CD)
Having spent the weekend with some new cd's a couple of them really stands out like Jeff Blacks Birmingham Road. If you are into music like Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton, Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Wilco, Lucinda Williams you will have to by Birmingham Road. The music is a kind of mixture of country/soul/blues whitch is both unique and classical. I really dig it.

This is the debut album from one of the best songwriters working today. It is a crime that this guy isn't a star.
