Life is bleak for Rose Lucas, a spirited, intelligent girl, born into a large family in the slums of pre-war Birmingham. But her friendship with Diana, daughter of a vicar from middle-class Moseley, gives her hope. She learns to aspire to a different kind of existence, vowing never to become a child-bearing drudge like her mother. Life, however, never follows the way of dreams. After a childhood marked by tragedy, Rose eventually finds and loses the love for which she has striven so hard. From Italy, where she has travelled during the Second World War, she is forced to return to Birmingham and an unhappy marriage, her hopes and illusions shattered. 5.0 out of 5 stars A book that I wil read again and again, September 14, 2011
By
This review is from: Birmingham Rose (Hardcover)
I bought this book from a second hand store whilst on holiday when i was 15 and I absolutley loved it then...and still love it now, almost 10years on.
I love the characters, the storyline-even though there is always a lot going on, and I loved the way that even after finishing the book, I couldnt stop thinking about Rose and the life she lead.
The story centres on Rose, who is a wonderful character that I warmed to immediately, following her struggles through life. I dont want to give anything away about the story because I want other readers to enjoy reading about each new twist and turn as much as I did-the good and bad ones.
The book is set during the war and after having read a number of books set in this time period, I personally feel that it is the best. I have read a number of her other books and although I really enjoyed them all, Birmingham Rose remains my favourite.
It is tear jerking in places and had me having to stop reading because i couldnt see through the tears! But the joys in the book are written so beautifully that you'll find yourself grinning with happiness for Rose and the other characters in the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a beautifully moving novel with a wonderful central character.
