Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

One in every four births in the United States is delivered by Cesarean section, and over one-third of these are repeat operations based on the medical myth that once a woman has a Cesarean delivery, all future deliveries must be handled that way. After years of deliberation, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recently recommended that routine repeat Cesarean sections should no longer be performed, with only a few exceptions. In this handbook, Flamm successfully describes and defends this newly popular concept of vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC). He discusses the subject in depth, using a question-and-answer format which, along with a very complete table of contents, makes this book an easily accessible text for library patrons. Highly recommended.

I really wanted a vbac and this book gave me everything I needed to know to help me go on to have 4 successful vbacs.
Pam Hendrickson
Now more than ever we need books like these out there, especially since many doctors lead us to believe that "VBAC is very risky" and c-sections are "generally safe."
Christa Dunn
The book is put together in a very readable fashion so that you can effortlessly flip to any particular information you need should you need it right away.

A super book! I am sorry to see that it's out of print. If you are considering a VBAC you must read this book. It answers all your questions, gives you statistics to work on and is written in plain English. I now have no doubts (even after 2 cesareans) that I must attempt VBAC. It is safe, infact safer than a repeat elective cesarean. And you also need to try for my own self satisfaction.

This book is written by Dr. Flamm, a pioneer in VBAC
(Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). He dispells current myths
and answers questions that most pregnant women have
about VBAC including: uterine rupture, chances of a
vaginal birth, safety for the baby, interventions needed,
medications available to the VBAC mom, etc. Start here!

I am so glad I got this book. I read it in about one day. I am pregnant again with my 2nd little girl, and I am so excited about the prospect of having a VBAC. I am doing things different this time and feel that I have a super chance of having a VBAC, especially after reading this book. I have refered to it all throughout my pregnancy. My first c-section was "failure of induction", some excuse, huh? I was just a victim. But this time, I feel empowered and I am arming myself with knowledge. GET THIS BOOK if you really want to have a VBAC. It will encourage and enlighten you!

I am not a huge reader, but I just about ate this book up. I read it cover to cover in 24 hours and feel totally encouraged. Yes, the studies are a bit outdated, but even so the informantion is still completely viable today. All of his facts are backed up and not in a hard to understand or silly way. A lot of the studies he performed himself over many years of research and dedicated study. You can tell he is not biased one way or the other, he just lays it all on the line for you to decide. I wish that Dr.Flamm would consider putting out an updated version of this book with any new discoveries and studies included. This was a way easier read than "Open Season" in my opinion. The book is put together in a very readable fashion so that you can effortlessly flip to any particular information you need should you need it right away. No skimming over chapters to find that one piece of information you are looking for. This book was awesome!!

While I'm happy with the sellers service, this book is awful. The information is outdated and inaccurate. It focuses too much on unsubstatiated risk. VBAC Companion, by Diane Korte or Caesarean by Odent are much better choices for more accurate information.

Great book all and all. SOME of the things, are a little out dated, like the updates on, yet again, another revision of the ACOG's statement on VBACs. Also, I am against routine IVs and EFMs, the author states that VBAC carries little risk to baby, so my question is, why routine EFM, just because you are a VBAC? Also, according to new studies, a laboring woman burns over 800 calories an hour. If this is the case, a laboring woman will need more than ice chips and juice. Do your research on "routine" procedures, couple that with this book and you are set to go. I also recommend "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth". It has the same concept of getting the FACTS across and not so much opinions of individuals.

I loved this book! Dr. Bruce Flamm should be given an award for his no nonesense view of VBAC. He is the reason I left my doctor at 6 months pregnant so I could pursue a doctor who didn't want to cut me open just because I had a c-section the last pregnancy!!

You need to buy this book if you are looking to do a VBAC!! It is not as outdated as some would say. It still applies today!
