Gr 3-4-- Two series entries that explore common practices among the world's religions. Clearly written and accessible, Rushton's texts provide a lot of useful information and allow easy comparison of the practices of different faiths. However, no attempt is made to explain the basic tenents of the religions discussed. All Christians are lumped together under the heading of ``Christianity,'' and references are made to ``Orthodox Christians.'' While the terminology is correct, and the term is included in the glossary, it is likely to lead to confusion. The author also neglects to mention that Sikhs are a sect of Hinduism. Birth Customs discusses various ceremonies such as welcoming, naming, or baptism. The addition of personal statements by children of the various faiths enhances the text. The themes in Death Customs are more clear cut, covering topics such as rituals for the dying, burial, beliefs about the afterlife, and mourning.
