5.0 out of 5 stars A video must for all birthing women, teachers, and ob/gyns!

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed
I thought that I was ordering a movie that showed multiple women giving birth at home. What this actually is, is 1 woman, who gives birth at home in Mexico. And they actually only show an 11 minute clip of her in labor, and then the actual birth. Any natural laboring sounds she made was covered up by music.

The rest of the DVD (which makes up the majority of...

5.0 out of 5 stars A video must for all birthing women, teachers, and ob/gyns!, January 26, 2003
This review is from: Birth Day [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a childbirth educator, this video is a must for normalizing the healthy, natural birth process. As a mother, this video was integral for preparing my family and myself for my second birth! I watched this video weekly with my two and half year old son ( I cry every time I see it!) as preparation for my homebirth. While my homebirth did not happen, what did happen was an even bigger miraculous, perfect birth experience! I found out my baby in utero was a footling breech,(one foot on my cervix, one foot tucked up)a presentation that has some recognizable risks, so my homebirth became a scheduled csection, much to my chagrin, and sorrow. Well, my baby and body decided we were going to have a natural perfect non surgical birth anyway! I watched Birth Day, and sure enough, went in to labor in the middle of the night...after staying at home for early labor, my husband and I left for the hospital....BOOM! My water broke in the car, and 20 minutes later, my perfect healthy footling breech baby was born, shocking all the doctors and nurses at a very reputable hospital! They had NEVER seen a woman give birth so ecstatically, without fear, just trusting in the process of this non typical birth...the doctor wanted to give me a csec, but I yelled "no! this baby is coming now!" and pushed out my son, Noah Jacob, one foot first, then his body, and head...it was glorious and liberating and beyond expectation and the birthing world will be talking about us for years to come...trusting the process, believing in birth, giving over to the pain all enabled us to have a stress free, magical experience!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Watch this video, trust in your body--GIVE BIRTH!!!

This video is completely delightful. It is full of deep and moving insight, and gives food for thought about so much. This family has invited us into their lives for an intimate and beautiful moment that most people never even get to see in their own families. Birth is a wonderous and beautiful thing to behold, and this video introduces it that way. I would recommend this to people who not ever have witnessed natural (or any) birth and as well as to those who have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must see video to all pregnant women, December 3, 2003

Thank you very much Naoli Vinaver Lopez for sharing with us your beautiful, natural homebirth experience in "Birth Day."

I am a Lebanese 29 year old physical therapist who encourages natural childbirth. Being a man, I cannot criticize or judge any laboring woman who asks for pain relief but I find it is very pitiful that almost none of the births nowadays occur naturally. Nearly all of the women have an epidural or even a cesarean because of fear and pain during childbirth. These powerful drugs cross the placenta and go directly to the baby and can cause great harm. Nature has Her own pain relievers if a woman is allowed to move naturally and birth freely without constant monitoring, observation and drugs.

Watching the amazing documentary "Birth Day" is a necessity for all pregnant women. It will reduce fear and encourage women to have their babies in a healthier, more natural way.

"Birth Day" is a great homebirth movie showing that childbirth can be a beautiful experience especially if shared with an encouraging, loving family.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Childbirth DVD/Video, December 29, 2005
This review is from: Birth Day (DVD)
I'm a doula and childbirth educator working primarily with couples who are planning a hospital birth. However I always show this beautifully made documentary because I want them to see how natural and normal the birth process can be.

Because it's such a short DVD I take it with me to a prenatal visit and we watch it at the end. Without fail, by the time the film is over the parents have snuggled close together, hugging and kissing and obviously very moved by the visual impact of the birth.

Even the most squeamish fathers seem to be able to handle this movie and are reassured that their presence and support at the birth are very important. If you only buy one DVD or video for your lending/teaching library, this is the one to get!

5.0 out of 5 stars The power and love of labor, April 7, 2005
This review is from: Birth Day [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This film is the most beautiful birth film I've ever seen (and I think I've seen a couple hundred)...it's inspirational, involves Naoli's family, and is beautifully narrated. For those who want to see how a mom can cope with labor, how her partner and family can support her, and how a woman can birth with her own intuition and power, this is the film! It also does not show the baby's birth graphically, as the baby is born under water, so it's a wonderful introduction to birth for anyone. Can't recommend it more highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful birth I've ever seen..., October 12, 2004
This review is from: Birth Day [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This film is the reason I decided to become a midwife!!! I first saw it years ago, and was totally awed by the power and beauty of this family. Their story, and the images of her sweet, nurtured, instinctive, and powerfully present birth stayed with me, and haunted me when I was confronted with the realities of birth in the US hospital system. When birth can look like this, who would want anything else? I am honored and thrilled to be joining the ranks of women like Naoli, and will return to this film time and time again for inspiration and hope. Naoli is a magical Mama who labors and births with complete faith; she knows that her body will move the baby out perfectly, she feels and expresses the labor and delivery with honesty and empowerment, and her husband, children, and extended family provide a wonderfully supportive atmosphere. It still brings tears to my eyes ever time I view it, and now I can even cry over the Spanish version!!! It's wonderful that she was willing to record her narrative in both English and Spanish - each version is complete in it's own right, beautifully edited and filmed, and matched with music that couldn't be more achingly perfect for the scenes. I will never tire of this film, and plan to share it with everyone I know!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truth that needs to be told, February 3, 2003

Birth Day is one of the very few films that I am willing to show WITHOUT RESERVATION to my birth classes. It is a beautiful, rich and real film. I have watched it dozens of times, and I never tire of it - in fact, every time I see it, I like it more. I don't have to pause the tape and add commentary or remind the viewers that umbilical cords should not be cut immediatelly and that babies should not be removed from their mothers. Birth Day tells a simple truth about birth - a truth that needs to be told over and over again in a culture such as ours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every pregnant woman needs to see Birth Day!, September 2, 2002
By
Ami (Malden, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birth Day [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As a childbirth educator, doula, and mother, I've watched countless birth videos. Without question, BIRTH DAY is the best video currently on the market. I live in the U.S., where in most cases birth has become more of a medical event than a life event. But BIRTH DAY gives viewers a chance to see a completely normal, natural home waterbirth, with the mother's family (including her other young children) in attendance. Viewers will be given the gift of spending a "birth day" with Naoli Vinaver Lopez and her family at their beautiful home in Xalapa, Mexico. To witness the love and support Naoli and her family share during her labor and birth, combined with beautiful music and narration, is nothing short of inspiring. I was so inspired that I, too, had a home waterbirth!
Every pregnant woman and her family needs to see this video. It was also one of the few birth videos I felt was appropriate to show my then-3-year old son as we prepared for the birth of his brother. Basically, it should be required viewing for anyone planning to ever give birth!

5.0 out of 5 stars Giving Birth to your Baby is normal and natural, July 24, 2005
This review is from: Birth Day (DVD)
I am a Doula and I am always looking for "tools" to show my moms that giving birth is normal and natural. I want them to know that you can give birth without terror or screaming in pain. I want them to know that the pain experienced in child birth is endurable and can even be joyful and euphoric. Women in the United States need to get this message. Our bodies can give birth if allowed to. This is why many women are not going to hospitals or doctors to give birth. They are choosing to have their babies at home with a midwife. If you are pregnant, seek out a Doula and a midwife who can help you have the birth experience that you and your baby deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring Movie, March 28, 2007

I already bought the original "Birth Day" VHS cassette about 4 years ago and loved it so much.

Now, with the new digital technologies I found it would be better to get its DVD, and, I enjoyed that DVD even more because it is a very great instructive extended edition.

It is so great to hear Naoli's opinion and also other persons, especially her husband and parents.

It is so empowering and encouraging, it inspires all other husbands and families and even children (older brothers or sisters) to assist at their beloved wives and daughters and mothers' births (especially if natural homebirths so much more intimate) without letting them alone.

Laboring women need to be assisted and encouraged; they need to feel love so that they would be able to give birth so beautifully and healthily in a so caring safe familiar personal environment.

It is also so neat to see Naoli breastfeeding Tamaya; it encourages all mothers to breastfeed naturally. Mother's milk is so much better and nutritious than all other industrial powder and bottle and carton boxes milks.
