After defining what birth defects are and offering a historical overview of various conditions, individual chapters describe genetic and environmentally caused defects, their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Fact boxes highlight and summarize information. Black-and-white photos, reproductions, and charts reinforce the factual material. The chapter notes attest to the author's thorough research. A readable introduction that will be useful for reports.

When a Flesch-Kincaid Reading Level test was conducted the books reading level is between eight and twelth grade level. Physicians and especially Pediatricians can benefit from this book because there is very factual information that one may need to know about birth defects. There are many topics in the book that give the background on birth defects and children with birth defects. It also lists and explains the causes of birth defects and also how it can be prevented. In this book it also explains what birth defects are and what is considered a birth defect. In the back matter of the book there is also a question and answer page that could be more helpful to the common reader. Also in the back matter the book gives some Further reading for a more in depth look at birth defects.
