From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Iannucci captures readers' attention right away with brief descriptions of two babies, one of whom was born with a defective heart and the other whom developed problems at six months due to a genetic disorder. The author acknowledges the anger and guilt felt by the mothers, both of whom followed all of the advice given for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. After defining what birth defects are and offering a historical overview of various conditions, individual chapters describe genetic and environmentally caused defects, their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Fact boxes highlight and summarize information. Black-and-white photos, reproductions, and charts reinforce the factual material. The chapter notes attest to the author's thorough research. A readable introduction that will be useful for reports.
