From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6?The story of a newborn humpback whale, told with dramatic episodes, heroines, heroes, and villains. The author begins by expressing his belief that whales make "...our world a more exciting place." The first chapter provides an overview, summarizing the creatures' evolution from land mammals and describing their habits. A map shows their worldwide distribution and a black-and-white drawing outlines their body parts. The following chapters describe mating behavior and then the birth and early development of the humpback. However, while the processes of mating and giving birth are alluded to, they are not explained in detail. The dangers inherent in the migration north are described fully?the storms, the need for constant movement, and an encounter with killer whales. Unfortunately, humanizing whale behavior mars the scientific approach. Included are lists of groups involved in protecting the whales and of museums and parks to visit.?Frances E.
