This is a remarkable book from cover to cover in terms of the scholarship and the breadth and range of the territory covered including theology, psychology, psychoanalysis, philosophy, archeology, astrophysics and literature, to name just a few of the fields of study and human endeavor that are brought into play at various points in the text. There is something for everyone in this thorough coverage of the first three chapters of the biblical book of Genesis. The book is basically a continuous interaction in dialog between various traditions and deep thinkers from a wide variety of backgrounds. There is impressive scholarship with regard to the traditional Judaic sources but there is also clear scholarship and knowledge with regard to other sources including Christian theological sources. A typical page includes references to Homer's Iliad, the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1917, Abraham Ibn Rambam, and Ken Wilber. There are references ranging from mysticism (e.g. references to the Zohar and Kabbalistic interpretations of the text) to modern theological writers (e.g. Thomas Merton, Paul Tillich and Mircea Eliade) and even on through to modern atheism (e.g. Richard Dawkins). Rabbi Samuel clearly runs the gamut in his unique eclectic scholarship and approach to the biblical text. The book is organized into 4 introductory chapters which introduce the reader to the general approach to the text and provide additional background. This section is followed by seven chapters that cover the text of Genesis itself in sequence from Chapter 1 through to Chapter 3.Read more ›

5 Stars! Absolutely Amazing! When I began reading this remarkable work I felt like I began an entirely new journey into uncharted territory. Birth and Rebirth through Genesis: A Timeless Theological Conversation Vol. 1: Genesis 1-3, gave me insights into concepts I never imagined about a story I had personally taught for years.

This book is not for the closed-minded. In his writings, Rabbi Michael L Samuel has dissected a universal passage by combining his research and exploration into psychology, language, science, literature, and many different faiths, to create an unbiased discussion on the text of the most widely known book on earth, Genesis.

As excited and eager as I was to learn something new about Genesis, I nearly stopped reading during my first reading. Not far into the first pages, I felt I had never really read the ancient text of the Bible. Its unorthodox way of combining a balanced and impartial conversation about an ancient text that has been studied for centuries, was astounding. I soon discovered such intensely deep insight into Genesis that I nearly put the book back on the shelf. It freighted me to realize how little I actually knew about a story I felt I could recite from memory.

This Rabbi has done a fantastic job creating a conversational commentary in a book that can be read by scholarly and novice readers alike. Be forewarned. If you begin as a novice, Rabbi Michael L Samuel will have you comprehending Genesis like a professor on your first read. But, believe me, you'll read it more then twice...

The book is great. Gives joy and augments reverence. It has set me into conversations with truly extraordinary men, e.g. Maimonides, Soforno, Philo Judaeus, Saadia Gaon, Ibn Gabirol, Judah Halevi, Joshua Heschel, Einstein, Freud, etc. The profound commentaries of these men on existence, in regard to spiritual experience, or on Genesis and the meaning of Torah, has made the reading of this book a rewarding and insightful experience. Basically, it supports the foundations of the pillars of Judaism and the Jewish identity and the love for life. I definitely recommend it to all.
