5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
I was actually really impressed. Sure, it's pretty cheesy, but aren't all Shadow Entertainment movies? I mean, really, "Puppet Master?" I thought Rebecca, the lead girl was very good with what she did with the script. You have to remember, these actors did not write the movie.....they had o make do with what was given to them and in all honesty, it's not easy to break...

This film is not as bas as some would make it seem, although there is plenty of bad acting.

Some strange guys are out hunting a coven of witches. When a young girl is introduced to the ceremony, they jump the gun and there is a lot of death. The surviving strange guy adopts the girl (Rebecca). The story jumps ahead twelve years and we find Rebecca on her 18th birthday.

Rebecca is heir to some power and first learns of it as she meets a mysterious man named Roman. He gives her a powerful amulet but may not be what he seems. At one point he seems like he is going to sacrifice Rebecca but is interrupted. Later he seemingly has to put those plans on hold when she loses her virginity and must regain her lost power.

Much of the story concerns Rebecca who has had a less than happy home life and is just starting to feel empowered. Between her powers and the amulet, she struggles with morality and the rush of power. It all comes to a head in the end with a far better ending than I was expecting.

The acting may be wooden in many scenes but Rebecca's struggle and the final resolution lift it up a notch. There is plenty of nudity although much, if not most, is male, thus making this an unusual film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really Bad, May 25, 2005

I watched about ten minutes of this before I had to turn it off. I agree with the other reviewers that the acting does suck. In fact, it's so bad that it was like the actors were actually trying to do such a terrible job. I've seen better acting on an episode of Sesame Street.

The main characters are two high school seniors, I think. They both look about thirty. At first glance, I was hoping this would be one of those underground gems that simply didn't get much publicity like "Ginger Snaps".

Yeah, don't buy this. Don't even rent it. Go buy yourself a candy bar with that money instead. Or rent "Ginger Snaps", which is far superior.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wow... Just wow., July 8, 2006
This review is from: Birth Rite (DVD)
Um, yeah. If you want to watch a movie with really bad acting and special effects, then have a party and invite all your friends. But seriously, that's all it is. Another thing: Usually the main character is the prettiest one, but no. In this movie, the main character's sister is really pretty while she's like... what some would call second rate. She's just average. Her sister takes the spotlight away from her when they're in a scene together. It's like... what's the point? Oh, and the ending is like so abrupt and stupid. I was like "Really... that's it?" Not worth the time...

... but if you know about all of this stuff (like acting and special effects and stuff), it's a really funny movie to watch. Especially at 1:30 in the morning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good flick but horrible ending., June 4, 2004
This review is from: Birth Rite (DVD)
This is a low-budget, direct-to-video horror movie but still a very good one nonetheless. It is about a witch who turns 18, discovers she was a witch since birth by meeting a warlock where she is given an amulet. She uses the amulet to increase her physical powers & get revenge on people who've been mean to her in the past. Her little sister gets sick & possesed by evil spirits so she & the warlock team up to fight the evil together.
The movie's camerawork is great, the special effects are pretty good, the acting is good most of the times, the music is also good for this flick.
The ending where the battle the evil seems more like a Power Rangers show than what you'd want to see in a movie. It seems too forced & staged to be taken seriously.
Natalie Sutherland is Rebecca, the 18-yo. with the amulet, she's the best-looking of the 3 & also has the most uneven moments, especially when she first uses the amulet to exact some revenge. Danny Wolske is Roman the warlock, he's good-looking but nothing like the other 2 lead women in the flick. Laura Nativo is Erin, Rebecca's little sister, she does the best acting job of the 3.
I only found out about this by digging around in the bargain at my place looking for some cool titles & got this one.

You have to remember, these actors did not write the movie.....they had o make do with what was given to them and in all honesty, it's not easy to break into films in Hollywood so I take my hat off to all of them for giving it a shot and actually doing good with what they had. Also, the lead girl, Natalie did really damn good considering she's actually a Scot that has a thick accent in real life! Maybe I'm biast...after all I'm sure she and I could be related... we have the same last name:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy but fun, October 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Birth Rite (DVD)
I know that a lot of people hate bad acting and cheesy effects. I know I do. But lately, I've loved B movies and the horrible crap they ensue. Birth Rite is without a doubt the most horrible movie in the world, yet I absolutely love it. Cheesy effects, bad acting, and just all around what you'd expect from a B movie. But I adore it. it's great for a laugh or to pass the time. It got 5 stars because it was funny.

1.0 out of 5 stars like a broken record...., July 1, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Birth Rite (DVD)
this type of plot has been done over..and over..and over again! the gun shot effects in the beginning are cheesy enough to turn you away yet i kept watching it, its a low budget film. And i have nothing wrong with that, but the plot was so over done and the acting was close to horrible. i'm only 15 and i could have acted WAY better than they did! And the sex scenes were so un nessisary and overdone. it seems they only had those in there to attract stupid horny guys...and its STEAL cheesy...i dont know WHERE these places get their actors but damn..i know ppl that could of have put more heart into it, atleast make up for its cheesyness..that aspect is just...sad...ya x_x!

1.0 out of 5 stars Witches and killers, September 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Birth Rite (DVD)
If you think that killers are the good guys and witches are evil, this may be your movie. This is some warped persons fantasy about what they might do if they had "powers". It's more scary from the view of the acting skills, scriptwriter skills, and production skills than the subject of the movie. It isn't quite good enough to make MST3K.

1.0 out of 5 stars this is not horror...its horrible, May 26, 2003
This review is from: Birth Rite (DVD)
okay, i saw this sitting in the video store and thought it looked really stupid...well i read the synopsis on the back and decided that it might be okay...well, i should have gone with my first impression. this is a really stupid and just plain old bad movie. the acting is on the level of my sisters elementary school plays...only the production quality of this movie doesnt quite measure up to those plays. the script was just bad...i dont know what else to say about it. the sound quality kept changing and was quite annoying sounding when they were talking inside. the story is one that has been done many many times before, only much better and with less pointless bad sex scenes. even the death scenes werent good, the effects were rather cheesey and would have been better if the people had just dropped dead and didnt have things like big mirrors fall and decapitate them in ways that didnt look real at all...and did we really need to see a girl sucked down a toilet?? i dont think so. i like horror movies, so graphic gore and stuff is no problem for me...but this was just done very stupidly.

oh, one good point...i liked the song that played over the closing credits...pretty good techno / industrial, with weird cool vocals about killing and...umm...i think mosquitos...i dont know what that had to do with anything, but i think i heard that word in there somewhere.

anyway, spare yourself the agony of this movie ...you will feel much better about yourself.
