Interesting but not very entertaining, January 28, 2009
This review is from: The Birth of Science in Fiction - Isaac Asimov Presents the Best Science Fiction of the 19th Century (Paperback)
Not science fiction in the way we would think of it. Fifteen short stories from around the world; most were written in first person and near the end of the 19th century. There is a short biography of each author that precedes each story. I found the stories interesting but not very entertaining. Guy de Mauspassant was undoubtedly the standout, and I would give honorable mention to Frank Stockton, Robert Milne, and J.-H. Rosny.
There is an introduction by Asimov which contains his thoughts on when science fiction perhaps first came to us and, what constitutes science fiction. Asimov's belief in man becoming more ordered and perfect through naturalism comes out even in the few pages he uses here. I find it typical of a great many noted authors that they are either, humanists, naturalists, nihilistic, head cases, or all; and it is the same common theme with these authors.
Wish you well and Lord's blessings
