Book Description

June 1, 2009
Focusing on the wide spectrum of feelings that may arise when with child, this companion to the emotional journey caused by pregnancy, birth, and early parenting offers informative resources and homeopathic remedies for both parents-to-be and childbirth practitioners. With advice about laying fears to rest, keeping birth gentle, and protecting the baby-moon, this hand-held doula helps couples face the choices on their journey to parenthood as well as adjust to their new roles as parents, all the while emphasizing the spiritual journey of birth by putting the mother's emotional and spiritual needs before her physical requirements. Proposing that the experience of childbirth has the capacity to nourish rather than replete the soul, the book encourages women to take responsibility for their own birthing process and to surrender to their own instinctive powers rather than to those of medical intervention.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a lovely book for any women wanting to explore the possibilities of a gentler way of giving birth in which she is in harmony with her body, and free from what is often conveyor belt management in a large institution."  —Sheila Kitzinger, author, The New Pregnancy and Birth Crisis

"I would thoroughly recommend this book to all pregnant women to read. Adela has been a doula for many years and has huge experience of supporting women through the time around birth and her gentle and wise approach shines from this book."  —Doulaing

"Beneficial for not just first time mothers but for those that have had a traumatic experience with a previous birth and want to understand how to avoid a repeat of this on another pregnancy or how to deal with feelings they may still be holding on to after that first experience. Nicely written, with the emphasis on emotions and empowering the reader rather than facts and figures."  —Babyworld

"It will either whet your appetite for more information or give you a helpful overview."  —Midwifery Today

"The title says a lot about the way the book encourages the reader to feel in control of their body and of the birth process. The book is filled with thought provoking artwork and inspirational quotes, with her concepts beautifully illustrated with stories from real women. I would recommend it as essential preparation for anyone thinking about holistic and natural birth."  —Vicki Williams, journal editor, AIMS Journal

"A sensitive and supportive guide to the journey of pregnancy and birth. Highly recommended."  —Dr Sarah J. Buckley, author, Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering

"Engaging, clear and emphasizes again and again the emotional and potentially spiritual ways in which birth touches us all very deeply."  —Nadine Edwards, cofounder, Birth Resource Centre in Edinburgh, and author, Birthing Autonomy

"[Adela Stockton’s] voice is one of gentle wisdom which recognizes the many different emotions women may feel on their journey through pregnancy and birth. Her spare style has a great deal more to offer than some much longer books on birth."  —Juno

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Primer for your Natural Birth - Home or Hospital, October 6, 2009
By
Fugitive from Mediocrity "NLW" (Lutherville, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birth Space, Safe Place: Emotional Well-Being Through Pregnancy and Birth (Paperback)
Although written from a UK/Scottish perspective, this little book is a great start when preparing for your 1st home birth. It is also very understanding of the necessity of a hospital birth (or if you sadly have no other choice). She is all about making sure you have what you & your baby need for a calm peaceful birth where ever you are & what ever your situation.

She touches on the very real mental blocks that can so easily become roadblocks that slow your labor & throw you off course during your journey. She offers personal stories from a variety of perspectives with as many different outcomes. Very well balanced!

I found this book easily & quickly put me in the right frame of mind when a lot of other natural birth prep books seem too involved & intimidating to dive right into.

I was thrilled to learn that my midwife is in total support of my HBAC & I was super excited to start preparing but I didn't know where to start.

This book is an excellent place to start!!
