It includes rockin' contributions from influential guitar stars Duane Eddy, Link Wray, the Ventures and the Fireballs, early surf from Californian group the Tornadoes, the pivotal and defining blast of Dick Dale's `Miserlou', the big surf hits `Pipeline', `Wipe Out', `Baja' and `Penetration', and the cream of the self-released recordings from the myriad of young surf groups that sprung up in their wake.
"The Birth Of Surf" is the strongest single CD compilation of instrumental surf music ever assembled. Every track is a killer, each one capable of heading up an album of its own. As a result it's an exciting listen as well as an essential purchase for the casual buyer and collector alike.
As if its title strength alone wasn't enough, "The Birth Of Surf" also has first-time-on-CD rarities such as `Earthquake' by Aki Aleong & The Nobles and `Latin Soul' from the Original Surfaris - neither of which have been released in any form since 1963. Another notable inclusion is the hit single version of the Surfaris' `Wipe Out'. Rather surprisingly this has become sought-after recently because most compilations have used an earlier, unedited version of the track.

The Best Surf Primer, Ever!,
This review is from: The Birth of Surf (Audio CD)
"The Birth of Surf" is clearly the definitive document outlining the beginnings, and the pinnacle, of instrumental surf music. Each song is a headliner! The liner notes are generous and informative, while the mastering work is beyond reproach. Enormous thanks and congratulations go to Alan, Dave and the staff at Pipeline Magazine for a job well done. Everyone here at DWM Music Company has enjoyed this CD immensely.

From 1958 To 1963, 26 Of The Best Surfing Sounds Anywhere!,

This review is from: The Birth of Surf (Audio CD)
There are no Jan And Dean or Beach Boys stuff here and while they are both legends in their particular musical field, this collection does'nt suffer from their absence.
It kicks off with Duane Eddy And The Rebels and finishes with Bob Hafner. In between are 3 of the greatest surf tracks, Miserlou by Dick Dale And The Del-Tones, Pipeline by The Chantays and to top them all, Wipe Out by The Surfaris. I certainly had not previously heard of most of the acts like The Fireballs, The Blazers, The Pyramids, The Illusions, the list continues. What they all have in common is the surfing ethos and they are clearly enjoying making their music. The sounds are twangy guitar, saxaphone, drums and virtually no vocals, all delivered at high speed and with great energy. If you like late 1950s to early 1960s music, don't let this one pass you by!
