"Kitchens of the Great Midwest" by J. Ryan Stradal
Each chapter tells the story of a single dish and character, at once capturing the zeitgeist of the Midwest, the rise of foodie culture, and delving into the ways food creates community and a sense of identity.
This was a wonderful story, full of rich dialect and clever prose. It takes us back to the 30s and describes the events and people so well, you can smell the atmosphere, taste the food. The characters are well-drawn and complex. If I have any complaint, it was that it was too short. I read it in two days and wanted the story to go on.
