Editorial Reviews

From the Author

From a very early age I loved reading fantasy.
There has always been a question that burned in my mind though:
Where does magic come from?
The idea for "Energy" was sparked by this question.
Nothing can come from nothing.
If a wizard does something magical, like create fire, there has to be something behind the magic.
That something is energy.

My debut novel, Energy - The Awakening, is the first in a trilogy called The Energy Chronicles.
In this book the talent of energy manipulation is discovered and explored.
Some people have the talent to feel and take energy from other living things.
In rare cases this talent is very strong enabling a person to take, give and manipulate all forms of energy, even the temporary energy of an arrow in flight.

From the first chapter the reader will be drawn into Brighton and Lilian's world, sharing the happiness, sadness, tragedy and love they share as they fight against all odds and great evil to be together.
Brighton faces seemingly insurmountable odds in his battle against evil and even has to cheat death to be with Lilian.
He is forced to use his talent to its fullest extent, and even beyond what he thought was possible, to save the people he loves.
Lilian also faces tough choices as she has to choose between her love for Brighton and saving the world from yet another evil tyrant.

In book II, Birth of a Wizard, the concept of energy manipulation and some other special talents are explored as well as the inevitable perceptions of magic and unwanted reputations that follow.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this eBook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: A new world is discovered in Birth of a Wizard, book II of the Energy Chronicles.

Brighton and Lilian, along with their children and two dear friends, have crossed the western boundary in search of a new life. Just as it seems they will finally settle down, tragedy strikes and Brighton is forced to use his gift in order to save his loved ones. Brighton's actions earn him an unwanted reputation and cause ripple effects that will haunt them in years to come.

Is Lilian strong enough to find her way back to Brighton with overwhelming odds against her?

My Thoughts: I went into this with reduced expectations after Energy. With the lack of description and narrative, Energy was still over 400 pages long; Birth of a Wizard is around half that. However, I found I quite enjoyed this book. There are still some misused words - again "feint" was used where "faint" should have been, as an example - but the story kept my attention quite well. I would have enjoyed more description, just like in the first book, but I think most fans of fantasy should find this an enjoyable read.

Review 6 out of 5

Brighton, Lilian, their children and two dear friends have crossed the Western boundary in search of a new, peaceful life.
Just as they think they have settled down, tragedy strikes and Brighton is forced to use his gift. This causes Brighton to earn an unwanted reputation, which will haunt them for years to come. Can Brighton and Lilian overcome the adversity which haunts them?

This is the second book by MJ Schutte of the Energy Chronicles. I absolutely LOVED it. The story carries on from the end of Energy. Brighton, Lilian and the children, along with their two friends, Adri and Brac, have crossed the western boundary and have decided on settling down in Fenton. I love all the characters in this book! MJ has written a fantastic series. I love the action and the romance! As I read this book, I became a honoured observer of the trials and tribulations of the most realistic characters to leap out of a book. Sometimes I felt like I was right in the midst of the action. There is more than one scene in which I absolutely felt I was there. It was EPIC! I am in awe of the ability of this author to pull a reader into his world. I am definitely going to read more of his books in the future! If you haven't read the first book, Energy, I recommend that you do.

Ok so I'll admit that I'm not good at writing reviews because I either give out too much info or not enough info, but on rare occasions I enjoy the book soo much that I have to say something about it. Just like with the first book in this trilogy, Energy, Birth of a Wizard was one of those books. Yes, it took me longer to read this one than Energy, but that's because I had to stop to go to work & get some school work done occasionally. Course the book was so good that I couldn't put it down for long & needless to say I now need to play a little bit of catch-up on my school work.

It is few and far between that I enjoy a sequel as much as the original book, so to enjoy it even more is an extreme rarity for me, I can count them on one hand and yes Birth of a Wizard is one of those. MJ picks the story up exactly where the first one left off and continues to dazzle us with the ongoing action and the continued romances. The way he balances the two is a total work of art. Unfortunatly I think it's going to be too long a wait for the next one.

After reading Energy, the first book to the trilogy, I had to get my hands on Birth of a Wizard. I tend not to have high expectations of sequels, but thanks to this amazing author, I will never have low expectations on sequels again. I LOVED this book just as much, if not more, than the first book. I couldn't put it down. I laughed, cried, yelled and cheered from beginning to end. The author has a special skill for making you feel a connection with the characters and their surroundings. The books starts right where the last one ended, continuing the journey of Brighton, Lillian, their friends and family, and lets not forget Mischief. You will see some familiar faces along with some new ones. A continuing battle to survive their life of good vs. evil. This book will have you on the edge of your set from cover to cover. I highly recommend this book for anyone that loves a great read. Thank you M.J. for another journey with old friends, you have left me again wanting more.

Wow! What else can I say. I love this series. Lily and Brighton's story just gets better and better, and I simply cannot wait to see what happens next. I love how this story unfolded and took me off in another direction. A looming war, constant danger and tragedy make this book and epic tale and a classic waiting to happen. I don't buy a lot of paper books these days, but series I love I buy, so I will be looking into purchasing these books in paper form for my collection.
New characters such as Donic and Lance and regular characters Nicky, Peter, Brac and Adri add such a great feel to the story adding their own personal stories to the greater story, making it so complete, I just fell into the story and didn't want it to finish, I hate that I loved the book so much that I read it so quickly and it was over again, and now the waiting begins.
Thank you for such an amazing story.I was given this book in return for an honest review.
