About the Author

Fiona Cairns made the cake for 2011's Royal Wedding. Her greatest innovation was the miniature cake - since widely copied - and first sold to the Conran Shop while working from her kitchen table. Her company now bakes 750,000 exquisite cakes every year for Waitrose, Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, and Le Bon Marche in Paris. She also makes Sir Paul McCartney's Christmas cake every year. Despite the fact that her bakery doubled in size in 2010, Fiona loves home baking and still makes cakes at home for friends and family. She lives in Leicestershire with her husband and two children. This is her second book, following the critically acclaimed Bake & Decorate, also published by Quadrille.

For some reason, I feel the need to reiterate the fact that this review is just the opinion of a non-professional cake decorating fool, with my thoughts and ramblings to be taken as such. Also, this book was obtained from the UK so everything is in metric weights; I do not know if the weights will be changed into the US version once the book is available here in the States.

I feel that with this book, as with many second offerings from new bakers, they are directed to capitalize on the success of their first book/public success, to keep the momentum going, and in doing so, they are rushed into the project. There are times when the second project works, and then there are times when I feel that if they took their time, perhaps the project might have been a bit more substantial.

These are my feelings on this second publishing entry for Ms. Cairns. Being thrown into the spotlight for having created the beautiful wedding cake for Prince William and Catherine for their spectacular 2011 nuptuals, Ms. Cairns and her business were center stage.

Her first foray into the baking field was "Bake & Decorate" and it was a wonderful book of cookies, cakes, and cupcakes. It's with her second book that I felt that it wasn't quite as impactful as her first. Also, I am assuming that it is an expectation that the reader already has baking skills so that written direction is all they need.

The projects themselves seemed to be short of teaching points; there is no visual tutorial photography for those who would be interested in this type of educational aid; there is a template or two for some projects.

I like this book, I've tried some of the recipes which are delicious and found them beautifull, not sloppy at all, some of them I'll never try, because I don't like, for example, rhubarb, but even those are super cute.
