It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown,
By A Customer
This review is from: Peanuts: It Was My Best Birthday Ever [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you compare this release to the other classic Peanuts shorts, it is unbelievable how bad it is. Do not waste your money on this one. There are clearly several mistakes that are very clear, Linus rollerblades through 5 minutes of the cartoon and the animation is reused. You see the same scenes over again during this sequence. They were clearly reaching for a story line to fill the 25 minutes. We keep saying that it is so different than the others that Shultz could'nt have been involved in the production because how could he allow this to be released. Sorry, but as you can tell my family was really dissapointed in this one.

How excited we were when we found a "new" Peanuts video!! We couldn't wait to show our kids a new video of Charlie Brown and the gang. Well, in my opinion, this one falls way short of expectations. The music isn't the great classical pieces of the old specials and the story is uninteresting. My 6 year old even spotted a mistake... Charlie Brown is obviously at the first birthday party (you can't miss that shirt!!), but he asked Sally how the party was... as if he weren't there. Stick to the originals!!

I don't understnd this movie. First Charlie asks Sally how the 1st party was. He was right there dancing! They don't tell how old Linus was or who the birthday kid at the 1st party was. Another thing, were is Peppermint Patty?! She is one of my favorite characters and if you ask me, I think this speical is nothing without her. I can understand her and Marcie making brief appearances, but just Marcie without Peppermint Patty? It dosen't seem like a Schulz-type movie to me.

I enjoy Peanuts and I thought this was pretty good. Linus was cute and I loved hearing the girl sing. My favorite part is when Sally does not understand what RSVP means. Anyway it was a good special.

"It's the Worst Birthday Present Ever, Charlie Brown",

It was bad enough when adults began showing up in "Peanuts" specials. Now comes this joyless exercise that offers nary a hint of Shultz' sarcastic wisdom. The simple story about Linus' quest for the affection of a blond, incessantly yapping waif might be tollerable if the dialogue were remotely interesting. And where's Lucy? Bet she went on strike after "Flash Beagle." I give this one a whole star because at least we get to watch Snoopy run into stuff at the grocery store. Still, this is definately not the video by which to introduce a new generation of potential "Peanuts" fans. Stick with the early specials and movies and avoid this depressing outing -especially on your birthday.

Terrible Episode!,

I first saw this And I was Disappointed Reusing footage and Playing That Awful Music that sounded like The Music from the Toe Jam and Earl Sega Genesis Game and another thing how does Linus Rollerblade without getting his blanket causht in his wheels The classical Music is Missing which makes this episode and the Pied Piper Outcasts from The Schulz Collection.

I just have to say, I was 8 or 9 when I first saw this (I'm an adult now) and it changed my life. Obviously it won't have that effect on everyone. I remember fast-forwarding through the ridiculous roller-skating bit and everything else except for the Mimi sections. Her song haunted me. I memorized every Italian word and sang it around the house so much my mother bought me a CD of Opera's Greatest Hits that had "O Mio Babbino Caro" on it. I became such an opera lover (and gardening-lover) that I have since been to countless operas and majored in voice at university.
The point I am trying to make is that while most of the special is just plain bad, the Mimi bits are worthwhile. Children watching this will be entranced with the beauty of Mimi's character and Linus's first love. Mimi makes a deep impression on Linus, and then she leaves. Childhood is like that, I think. We are constantly discovering the most wonderful things and then losing them. I'm not saying this video should win an award, but I do think it deserves the time of day. Who knows, your child may one day become an opera singer too.

Not as bad as I thought.,

In reading some of the previous reviews, I thought I had made a terrible mistake in getting this video. While I certainly wouldn't call it the best, it's not quite as bad as some people thought. Charlie Brown is clearly at the first birthday party, so I don't understand why that got past the writers and editors. I wouldn't pay original price, but if you or your kids like Peanuts, it's a nice change from the more traditional specials. Pick up a used copy-it's worth $2-3.

Although not as good as other Peanuts specials, still great!,

I still can't get that girl's song out of my head. The first part is strange but by the end it's great. My favorites for Peanuts are 'It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown' and the Christmas one of course! Thanks

I noticed some grown-ups didn't like this video. Well, my kids like it well enough. It must be the mystery and innocence of childhood.
